Tilting on Celebrity Apprentice

Monday, April 13, 2009 - Annie Duke

Oh…no…not me. I don’t tilt when I am playing a game. I might walk away from the game and then get pissed off…but never during. Apparently, Melissa Rivers hasn’t played as much poker as I have because that girl is on tilt. And I want all the poker players watching Celebrity Apprentice to take note of Melissa’s completely tilty meltdown so they will stop freaking tilting at the tables. Melissa offers a great demonstration of how allowing emotions to rule your game decisions never results in anything good.

So, here is why Melissa is tilting. Melissa knows that if I am friends with Brande that it is bad for her. Jesse is a very strong player so it feels unlikely that Trump is going to fire him any time soon. I have been playing a strong game and I can raise money so ditto for me. That leaves Brande and Melissa as the vulnerable ones on our team. If I am unwilling to throw Brande under the bus, if I side with her, then Melissa is the likely person to go. That sent Melissa (and Joan) on a tilt like I have only ever seen from the likes of Phil!

The problem is that Joan and Melissa both directed their tilt at me. Now, first, they are spitting vitriol my way because apparently they think it is my job to save Melissa. But it is not my job to save her, that would be Melissa’s job to save Melissa. And Melissa’s reaction is counterproductive to playing the game well. She is now completely reacting (with her emotional, limbic brain) rather than planning how to stay in the game.

Every time she goes after Brande I see it. Every time she rolls her eyes or shrieks for attention I see it. Instead of settling down and working her ass off to make sure she is safe in the boardroom, she is going after Brande in a nasty, personal way (behind her back). And her attempts to be nice to Brande’s face are thinly veiled because she is too emotional to contain herself. Not a good strategy.

Compare that to Brande’s non-tilt. I was never going to recommend that Melissa go before Brande because I felt that Melissa was the stronger asset to the team. In the boardroom during the Lifelock task I made that clear. After I criticized Brande, though, she did not tilt. Instead she took a breath and realized the comments were valid (after all she had said she was drafting along behind the stronger personalities herself!). So when push came to shove she didn’t get pissed off, she didn’t tilt. Instead she just addressed the criticism and stopped doing the drafting. She started taking a leadership role, being proactive, being an asset to the team. I saw that and became her ally. Why? Because there is nothing that impresses me more than a person who admits their mistakes and learns from them. Go Brande!

So what a study in contrasts. Brande remained unemotional and redeveloped her strategy to great effect. Melissa tilted and flailed about, hurting her chances in the game because she was unable to calm down and stop letting the tilt drive her choices. Take note of this poker players. I am not sure you will see a better example in a game of why tilting is so dangerous to a successful outcome.

Play poker like Brande, not like Melissa.

    Hi Annie,
I have only managed to see a few episodes , however the first one I saw, it was quite apparent that Melissa;s attitude will get her fired, although I think it is a tad unfair to have mother and daughter on same team..they would close ranks in the crunch..So I guess they are teaming up to try and get you on tilt…I can sure equate your comments to the poker world about tilting..very good example.. although look at phil- all those bracelets and he is a well known tilter?? go figure…Joan rivers has survived very well and has taught her daughter how to survive…too bad i fear her tactics will not be upfront and honourable..good luck..It is a pleasure to be proud of one of my poker hero”s working through trumps challenges..
    you go girl!!

kathy (the “IRISHBEAVER” ON UB) still on step 2 ha ha..for wsop challenge..up/down but never say die ha ha

    Hi Annie,
I just wanted to leave a note to thank you for making poker players look so good on a mainstream TV show. As you can imagine being a successful recreational poker player in a professional setting can sometimes be a hindrance…especially to those who don’t know or understand the game. You have shown yourself to be smart, personable, hard working, and resourceful; and are far and away out performing anyone else in this show as far as I can tell. This is so nice after the “Surivivor” with JRB which I think kinda made poker players look arrogant and foolish. Thanks again, I hope you win! (And not that I really ever had any use for either of the Rivers before, but if I ever had any respect for either of them it is gone!)

  3. Joansright Says:

If you think your all that and a bag of chips…you know what happens when someone steps on it?

People should relax a little more and not be so quick to slam other or make opinions without seeing both sides.

We saw both sides, and Joan is right, your a dirty player

  4. DukesUP Says:

    Hey Joansright,

If your intention was to look foolish then KUDOS!

Clearly the purpose of the GAME Celebrity Apprentice has flown above your radar.

It’s not a love fest honey, it’s a knock down, drag out war where the victor gets to reap the rewards. I’m not going to speak for Annie, but I don’t think she joined the show to make life long soul mates.

She’s there to WIN! Her tactics are logical, calculated, smart and tenacious.

You should turn back to America’s Funniest Home Videos and leave Celebrity Apprentice to people that understand it.

  5. Joansright Says:

Hehe The unfortunate thing is that Joan and Mellisa’s ” Card” hands are better than Annies. Spending this much time being upset about it wwould take anyone off thier game.. And if shes there to win , why is she acting so much like Omorosa? did she not see what happened to her in the end? Ive been in the war, sold my last ISP 6 months ago now taking time to enjoy raising my children. I know one thing, winning a bunch of money at a poker table is a heck of a lot easier than starting up a succesful Publicy trading company and selling it off for profit. And any of those bag of chips people I had the pleasure of working with over the years, seem to be still stuggling in the game :)

  6. Joansright Says:

Also I might add I think its flown over your head…Its For CHARITY…..A TAX write off….GOOD WILL….Where is the war in that? No one gets a Job at the end, they just get a big tax break.

  7. what a joke Says:

I would never play poker like Brande unless I plan on sleeping with everyone on the table.

  8. DukesUP Says:

    Hey Joansright,

    LETS MAKE A PROP BET!

You think you’re right, I think you’re ignorant. You think you’ve caught the point of the show, I think you’re best suited to watching America’s Funniest Home Videos.

Here is the bet. Very simple.

Annie Duke Will Beat Joan Rivers.

It’s a gentlemen’s bet though, so if I win, you have to state in this thread, that you are out of touch with reality.

Now you tell me what I have to do if Joan wins.

    Game on?

  9. DukesUP Says:

Also, Joansright, ‘your’ is a possessive adjective, as in ‘belonging to someone’. What you meant to say all those times was ‘you’re’ which is a contraction of ‘you are’.

    That’s lesson one.

Also, that ‘bag of chips’ thing, is that hillbilly slang? I’ve not heard that before.

  10. AnniesPro Says:

I think Annie is the PRO both as a poker player and on Celebrity Apprentice. I was on a plane with her last September where she flew to Aruba to attend the Aruba Poker Classic sponsored by UltimateBet. Then as a spokesperson for UltimateBet she hosted a poker clinic. When the tournament started she was, however, not there. She had returned to the States to start Celebrity Apprentice. That is dedication. Unlike some of the other contestants who have been absent (what was it, selling jewelry on QVC or some channel like that).

I think Joan and Melissa Rivers are both the most foul mouths females I have ever heard and make me ashamed to say I am a woman. And besides neither of them are really that funny.

  11. AnnieTheTrueWinner Says:

Annie’s behavior and attitude throughout all the attacks were fantastic. I was appalled that Trump would let the attacks go on like they did. I was disgusted that Trump wouldn’t shut Joan up for 2 seconds to let Annie speak. Joan is a disgrace and Trump just got down in the ditches with her because they are in the same ‘network of friends’.

A Friends/Business network is no reason to make yourself look like an idiot but Trump has managed to do that.

I was not rooting for anyone on this season. But as weeks went on I became more of a fan of Annie just for her integrity and drive alone.

Keep your head up Annie, You were a true winner, you were just being judge by a guy with no balls to stand on his own two feet.

In the end you have done great things for your charity which is something to be very proud of :)

  12. Joansright Says:

I guess the “PROPS” goto me then, where do I collect them??

  13. TiltedPrettyPony Says:

joan the obnoxious old hag had annie on serious tilt just before annie got canned by da dondon. “mafia money” lol annie took the bait… hook, line and sinker! bet she would like to play that “hand” over. she lost control of the hand and AND her composure; the jackass ran right over her. joan, like a pro…went over and consoled her; annie must have felt like a child…or a fish out of water ;P (insert spongebob laugh.) so tell us what joan was saying? gg annie … u played great… blah blah no hard feelings, i really like you…blather, blather, blather… its just a game…( and a very dumb game) …sn sn sn snnnorrr rrr rr re… thank God for you tube! and poker :) of course!
