Tightening Up

Saturday, June 27, 2009 - Gene Bromberg

They’re down to six-handed in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha/8 tournament and Brandon Cantu is still the chip leader. But just barely–Lee Watkinson has closed the gap to around 150,000 after about three hours of play. The action started off quick with three eliminations in about 90 minutes but things cooled off a bit from there, though Cantu has found himself involved in a few big hands lately. In one he hit a five-outer on the river to chop a pot, in another he got skunked by a three-outer on the river to get quartered. That’s the way of things when you play Omaha, the cards come down and then you take a second or two to figure out just what the heck happened to you.

This event is playing out at the secondary feature table, which is the same table where Brandon finished runner-up in the $1,500 No-Limit Hold-Em tournament last week. He’s also sitting in the exact same seat he was in when he finished second. If you were the superstitious type that might give you a queasy feeling of deja vu. Fortunately successful  poker players are cold, calculating, rational people with nothing but contempt for silly superstition. Kinda makes me wish I was a successful poker player.
