Bloggers Tournament
Thursday, May 21, 2009 - smokin_aces
Apparently our community loves Freerolls with a twist so we’ll keep them coming!
The next Ultimate Bet Blog Freeroll is Wednesday May 27 and let’s make it the best blog freeroll ever!
As usual, the winner will get a seat at the Sunday 200K and the chance to take down that pot with NO BUY IN! There are cash prizes for other top finalists as well.
Here’s the code – UBBLOGjen8675309
As mentioned last week, the ‘easter egg’ in the code is a reference to a once famous Tommy Tutone song about a girl named Jenny. It would be annoying to have that phone number
See you in Freeroll! GL

Once upon a time we started offering Ultimate Bet Blog Tournament Freerolls. The only thing you had to do was find a registration code on the blog, find the Blog Freeroll in the tournament lobby, enter the code AND YOU WERE IN! We gave away seats to the 200K guaranteed for first place, and cash prizes to the top finishers. BRAINCHILD1 even WON $1040 by cashing in the tournament he won entry to with his Blog Freeroll win. Those were the good old days.
Who wants to see those days continue? I can bet at least the 778 people that played in last month’s Blog Freeroll do!
Ok ok, let’s do another one!
Wednesday May 27th – Blog Freeroll
Registration Code – UBBLOGjen8675309
Extra kudos to the person that discovers the pun hidden in the code. If you were a music lover in the 80’s you have a good shot.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN………………….AGAIN!

One of the most important inventions in mathematics–indeed, one of the most important inventions in human history–was the zero. Yes, the zero actually had to be invented, people all around the world were doing math for centuries without having a precise symbol or even a definition of what zero was. They’d just leave a blank spot on their clay tablets or a couple of crossed bars on their papyrus scroll to indicate that there was nothing there. You think your high school algebra class was hard? Try doing the math without having a zero to work with. Let’s see you solve for x then, tough guy.
Anyway, last night 774 players took the tables for April’s UltimateBet Blog Tournament, and each of our dear readers ponied up the same amount of cash for their seat–zero. Our blog tournaments are freerolls, of course, and those fortunate and skilled enough to make it deep can translate their investment of zilch into some serious coin. How serious? Well, last month BRAINCHILD1 played in the Blog Tournament, took it down, and won a free entry into our $40K Sniper tournament (usually the winner gets a seat in our $200K Sunday Guaranteed Tournament but, hey, we’re flexible). BRAINCHILD1 then continued his tear and cashed in the Sniper tournament, to the tune of $1,020. That’s over a grand, people. And to illustrate this for the more mathematically-minded among you:
$1,020 > $0
So perhaps it’s no surprise that 774 players stepped up last night to see if they could multiply their buy-in by a factor of a thousand. Wait…any number multiplied by zero equals zero, right? So that’s doesn’t make sense. Never mind, I was an English major, all these numbers give me such a headache..
No doubt KILLMEAJOKER had a headache when he went out on the bubble in 19th place, being the last of the field to start with nothing and end with nothing. We paid 18 spots last night but when you play in a tournament it’s the final table you usually have your eyes on, and these are the nine players I had my eye on when that final table was established:

You’ll notice that in this hand INDY29 is rivering 6PACKMOM111 to send her (?) out of the tournament. I didn’t get a chance to take a screenshot with all the players briefly relaxing at the end because the action was fast, furious, and final. It only took 41 hands to go from final table to last man standing, and this time around it was EMAUSS who conquored all who dared stand before him. Heads up against EBSHELLY72 he flopped a gutshot to EBSHELLY72’s top pair, and when the turn brought the six he needed to make his straight that was that. EBSHELLY72 didn’t have enough chips left to get away and had to hope for a chop to stay alive. No chop was forthcoming and EMAUSS took down the Blog Freeroll and won himself an entry into the $200 Sunday Guaranteed Tournament.

Will EMAUSS duplicate BRAINCHILD1’s feat and turn his freeroll finish into a four-figure cash? We’ll keep an eye out on Sunday to see if our readers continue their (very profitable) hot streaks.

When my family gets together for our too-infrequent poker games my Uncle Bob always says the same thing after we play the first hand. “You can’t win ‘em all if you don’t win the first one,” he says as the winner rakes in the nickels and dimes. Come to think of it, its usually Uncle Bob who wins that first pot. Wonder if he sets the deck before we play…nah.
Anyway, as I took my seat last night in the UltimateBet Blog Freeroll tournament I was ready to dominate, crush, lay waste to vast regions, etc etc. I raised the first hand and took down the pot with a devastating continuation bet. “You can’t win ‘em all if you don’t win the first one,” I typed in the chat as 70 virtual chips were added to my stack.
I won the next hand as well, as my pocket fives held up against an opponent’s flopped straight draw that didn’t get there. The third hand I won with pure sleight-of-hand–with two queens on the flop I made ominous calls on the flop and turn, only to lead out with a pot-sized bet on the river. My opponent mucked and I flashed my J-2 as invisible hands pushed the pot my way.
By now you’re probably reading about my trash-talking and bluff-showoffing and thinking, “Jeez, this guy is a (deleted)”. And understandably so. But here’s the thing–I’d describe my game as tight-weak. Actually, that isn’t quite right–tight-meek is probably better. I don’t play many hands and those I do play I play passively. In other words, I suck. But if I could disguise my timid play through early bombast and bluster, maybe I could get one of these guys to stack off to me when I had the nuts. Which would give me enough chips to fold-fold-fold until I got another big hand. As I just said, I suck.
Anyway the fourth hand was dealt and I flopped the nut flush draw. The flush got there on the turn and I won the pot. I won the next as well after flopping middle pair and betting out. Then I won the sixth pot of the night with a kamikaze check-raise bluff that, of course, I showed to the table.
I won six hands in a row. SIX! I was the puppetmaster and I held the strings of the other players at ,my table! I felt like Neo at the end of The Matrix, when he can make bullets freeze in mid-flight and clatterl to the floor. So this is how the greats play poker! They don’t just wait for big hands, oh no! They manufacture big hands from small ones, and transmorgify their big hands into monsters. The scales fell from my eyes. “I can DO this,” I said aloud. “I can PLAY THE GAME. I am INVINCIBLE!!!!”
The next hand I cold-called a raise with 2-4 offsuit on the button. The flop was all paint and after the raiser checked I made a pot-sized bet. He instantly shoved.
“Ah, shit,” I said.
I folded, and with that my streak came to an end. As did any illusions that I was about to take the poker world by storm. I did win one nice hand that got me up over 6,000 in chips, but I think you’ll agree that it was a bit of a cooler for NLDBULL (the money went in on the flop):

But you can count on flopping a bigger two pair to your opponent’s two pair only so often. And it didn’t happen often enough for me, as my stack dwindled and I committed the last of my chips with an open-ender and two overcards. I didn’t get there and so finished 52nd out of 429. Not a bad showing, one might say. Not a good one, either. Certainly not as good as the nine players who made the final table and took home some cheddar from last night’s freeroll:

In the end it was BRAINCHILD1 who took the chip lead and held it all the way to the end, winning last night’s freeroll and earning a ticket into this Sunday’s $200,000 Guarantee Tournament. And while BRAINCHILD1 is trying to transform a freeroll ticket into a five-figure payday, I’ll be deep in contemplation, reflecting on my poker philosophy. “Perhaps…instead of focusing on winning the first pot, you should focus on winning the last pot…”
