Bouncing Like a Pinball

Monday, November 2, 2009 - Joe Sebok

What’s up UB?! Hope that all are doing well and life is nothing but good out there.  I have tried to play more and more on the site recently, had a couple of winning small sessions playing the $1-$2 game, and then got my ass kicked pretty good one day as well.  I just like sitting around with ya’ll and chatting it up as well, so that has been more my focus with playing on the site so far.  Seems I haven’t had enough time to really get serious with the cash game playing much, which explains the small stakes.  I’ve played the Sunday $200k as well a few times, but haven’t managed to get anything going there at all.  I’ll have to check with Cantu about how he does it.  That fool seems to win a UB tournament every other week.  Wtf?  How is he pulling this off?  Big wowzers…

I’m writing from Miami airport, on yet another business trip out of the country.  I swear, you would think I was more important with all of these trips I am taking all the time.  Haha.  One this is sickly for sure:  I am racking up mad frequent flyer miles. :)   Just flew here from Vegas this morning, where I had just finished up taping my very first episode of “Poker After Dark”…but hopefully not my last.  I always think I talk so much more than other poker players that they will want my ass on those shows.  We’ll see if this inaugural Seebs episode sparks them to bring me back.  I can always hope.  My lineup featured Howard Lederer, Ali Nejad, Gabe Kaplan, Mark Gregorich, and Kara Scott and the theme was media-based.  Was a total blast.  You’ll have to wait for it to air to see who won though.

It’s unbelievable that the WSOP final table is just around the corner, and by corner I mean next weekend.  I am sickly excited and am obviously pulling for Phil to work some magic and somehow take down that title.  It’s hard for me to see anyone disputing that he is the best that has ever played if he can win that bracelet.  I think he will have moved solidly past Chip and Doyle for all around dominance with a win there, and that’s to say nothing of his online game, where he crushes too.  The dude is a total machine.

Speaking of the final table, be looking for me to do some commentating on the Bluff show that UB is sponsoring.  Should be a blast and I’m excited about it.  We’ll also be recording some “PokerRoad Radio” episodes as well, so be looking for those.  Basically, it’s going to be a seriously busy weekend in Las Vegas coming up.  I’ll also have a pretty big announcement that we are going to be letting out of the bag during next weekend as well, so be paying attention for that.

All of you be good, and I’ll holler at you soon!

peace,
J

Aruba Part 2

Sunday, October 25, 2009 - Liv Boeree

So last week I finished off on me busting out of the Main Event. This left me with a whole five days of Aruban freedom to get more sun, sand and sea than you can shake a stick at.  The sea part of this started early the wednesday morning when I met with Brandon Cantu, his girlfriend Leslie and Allie Prescott for breakfast, and I proposed the idea of renting a small catamaran which according to the intrepid Binger brothers, was the best and most relaxing watersport on offer.  Now I’ve been sailing a few times as a kid, and even have the holder of the world record for the longest sailing circumnavigation of the globe in my family, and this gave me an over-inflated impression that I knew how to sail. I apparently exuded this confidence to the rest of the “crew” and also to the boat rental woman, who when she asked if we knew how to sail we very proudly said yes.

So after telling us we had strictly one hour, she set us in the water and handed me the rudder and sail rope(?!). Before you could say shark, the wind grabbed us and sent us on our merry way, very much alone.  Things actually started well, with Brandon going “wow, you actually can sail”, everyone relaxed as we sped along the coast at one with nature’s forces. That was until we had to turn and try and go the other way. We’d been instructed to ONLY turn into the wind, as turning away from it could be dangerous and lead to capsizing. However, turning into the wind resulted in the sail going limp and all momentum lost. Therefore we opted for the latter, and the boat nearly turned over Leslie and Brandon got whacked in the head by the sail flipping to the otherside.

Stupidly, I then let the boys take over and before we knew it we had only twenty minutes left and were about two miles out to sea. Despite this we somehow floundered back at the slowest pace anyone’s ever moved back to shore and got back just thirty minutes late. Ahem.

So you’d think that’d be the last time we ever went sailing alone. Oh no. we went again and this time managed to flip the boat over twice, the first time completely by a combination of ignorance and a huge gust of wind, and the second time because the first time was so funny that we wanted to do it again.

Moving on… so the other things I did for the rest of the trip included a horse ride through the Aruban landscape (complete with galloping on the beach) and a very bumpy ATV ride to some beautiful coastal features. In the nighttime were fantastic parties, including the legendary party in Phil Hellmuth’s rooftop suite, which had a private performance by the Dan band and more bottles of champagne than you can imagine. Oh and naked girls in the hot tub, can’t forget them! The Ultimatebet closing party was stunning as well, with the Dan band performing on a stage over the pool, more naked people and bodypainted gladiator models roaming around giving you cocktails. What a perfect end to the perfect trip!

WSOP and Stripteases

Thursday, October 1, 2009 - Liv Boeree

Well this week hasn’t been remarkably different from the last one except for instead of bubbling, I bombed out of the one tourney I played nice and early. This was event 1 of the WSOPE, the £1k buyin that got you all of 3000 chips and left you basically one hand to play with, which in my instance was Aces vs someone’s 10s which spiked a ten leaving me making friends with the bartender and seeing how many peanuts I can throw into a bowl while waiting for my friends to also bust the event.

So since then I’ve been doing what any self-respecting Londoner poker player would do when the WSOPE circus gets into town and that’s party party party (something I do even better than bubbling). Lots of the UB crew are in town including Brandon Cantu, Michael Binger and Phil Hellmuth, and we’ve been pretty busy showing London just how it’s done. We’ve partaken in an orgy of prop-betting and drunken cash games at the Barracuda (my head still hurts from that one) and even hired out the private booth at the USA Sports Bar (because you Americans can’t bear to take on our proper sports). At this bar Phil filmed a rather entertaining video which I will promote by saying that someone gets topless… for those of you who can’t resist the promise of nudity here it is: http://www.twitvid.com/122FD

Online play on UltimateBet.com

Saturday, August 29, 2009 - Brandon Cantu

Prior to signing my sponsorship deal and joining an elite group of pros on Team UB, I had played some online poker. My play was quite irregular, consumed basically with Sunday tournaments and random cash games here and there. I have become known as a live player rather than an online one. However, since signing on with UltimateBet and post WSOP, I have really begun to dig into online poker and cash games much more.

At first, I was playing at my personal $5-$10 table on UB. I realized I wasn’t mentally prepared for it. I was coming off live play all summer at the WSOP. I had some less than stellar sessions, to say the least. I dug down, I refocused and began with some $2-$4 NL tables and started grinding; 5 tabling. What I found was that I was actually enjoying playing online for 10 hours a day. Not to mention, I was playing great. I was getting cards and I was winning. I moved back up to $5-$10 NL tables and still had success. This was about the time that I found some great heads up games. I have noticed since I started playing a ton on UB, heads up games have been the most profitable for me.

I have had some pretty decent online tournament results as well. In early August, I final tabled a UB $120.00 buy-in. I was just getting warmed up for the month and finished 5th for $2000. Things were progressing nicely. On August 16, I was playing the Sunday $500.00 buy-in with a $100k GTD. One particular hand in this tournament has gained notoriety within the Pocket Fives forums. This hand was actually a huge point of the tournament for me as well; a tournament that I went on to win for $36,000.00 and beat out PSMONEY heads up. The aforementioned “misclick” truly did take place and it gave me the energy I needed to close this one out. Lots of people like to say that I “run like god” and either get extremely lucky or blow up with terrible plays. For as many fortunate situations that have rolled my way, an even greater amount of detrimental rolls have come my way. Below, you will find the PocketFives discussion:

http://www.pocketfives.com/poker-forums/7/pretty-sick-misclick-on-ft-of-100k-by-brandoncantu-4586074

I’m watching the FT and this happens. They were playing each other pretty hard. I have no idea if it really was a misclick, there was a pretty good pause before the call.

Two days after the $100k GTD win, I was playing a VIP 45 Seat tournament. I had a bounty on my head and I was about to make the VIP players earn it. I got off to a slow start as I wasn’t really picking up any hands. I was also playing some other cash games at the time. I then made some plays, doubled up and was moving. I got real focused real fast. I ended up finishing 4th which netted me $400.00. The final table had some really good players. I watched the remainder of the tournament and NIGHTMAREFIS ended up outlasting DONKINITUP, who each took home $1,200.00 and $800.00 respectfully. I must say, these VIP 45 Seat tournaments are a good time.

Mentally, the last few months being a member of Team UB, has improved my game. I feel so comfortable logging into the UltimateBet client, it continues to feel like a home game for me. I am so relaxed and focused. I have easily played the best online poker of my life since joining UltimateBet. I am going to keep working on my online game to improve even more but I cannot lose focus of my live playing goals for the remainder of 2009.

Good luck everyone with all the upcoming travels and tournaments. See you on the road. Look for me playing on UltimateBet.com at both my $5-$10 NL 6-handed and $5-$10 NLHU tables.

Looking Ahead, Poker and the Road

Saturday, August 22, 2009 - Brandon Cantu

The past few days I have been looking at my schedule for the upcoming months.  I will be traveling quite a bit and look forward to seeing as much of the world as much as possible each year.  Traveling has becoming one of my favorite past times and has become a traditional post World Series of Poker activity.

Last year, immediately after the WSOP, I traveled to Costa Rica and Nicaragua with my agent and good friend, Matt Palmer.  As I have previously mentioned, I have stayed in Vegas since the WSOP lounging at home, playing a ton on UltimateBet.com and just relaxing.  However, I now have the itch to get on some planes, play some poker and visit some destination spots.

Looking ahead in August, I will be heading to the World Poker Tour’s “Legends of Poker” at the Bicycle Casino in Bell Gardens, California on August 22nd.  After winning my second WSOP bracelet this year, I wouldn’t mind making a strong run at another WPT victory. My stay in California will be about a week.

After the Bike tournament, I return to Vegas to quickly repack for the next stop, which is Portland, OR, for my 10 Year Class Reunion.  Though I get back regularly with all the boys and old friends; 3-on-3 basketball tournaments, Holiday parties, some NBA games, etc., I look forward to seeing classmates who I have lost ties with.   All in all, it will be good to be back in my hometown.  Portland weather is perfect this time of year and will be an added bonus to reconnecting with old friends.

After a week or so back home, I will again return to Las Vegas planning to play online before heading out to London for the WSOP Europe.  Two of my good hometown friends, Tony and Dave traveled with me last year.  We were able to travel Europe a bit after the WSOPE and this year should be quite similar.  This year I plan on traveling to Amsterdam, a destination I look forward to exploring for a few days I have free time.  This year I will be traveling with poker player and friend, Allie Prescott.  He and I both traveled to Venice for the WPT event and are going to continue our adventures post WSOPE.

Once the European travels are done, I will be flying directly to UltimateBet.com’s Aruba Classic, October 3rd – 10th.  I am very excited for this tournament.  Not only because Aruba is beautiful and that I will have friends attending, but that I am a sponsored UltimateBet Pro.  It almost feels like it will be a “home game” for me.  It will be nice to see some of the UB staff I met at the WSOP this summer, as well as play and visit with all the other UB Pros.

I feel lucky to have the opportunity to see so much of the world.  Safe travels to everyone else that is also making the rounds the next few months.  Good luck.

Shady “home” games

Friday, August 21, 2009 - Bryan Devonshire

Tuesday night I found myself playing in one of the more interesting private, shady, and illegal “home” games that I’ve ever been involved in.  It was nothing compared to the game of “Three by Four” I played in the back room of an illegal strip club in Nassau last January with Brandon Cantu, Jeff Madsen, and Matt Woodward and four locals, but it was an interesting experience nonetheless.

I’m in Cornelius, North Carolina on the apex of my cross-continent motorcycle ride staying with my friend Court Harrington.  Apparently casino poker is illegal around here or something, I’m not really sure, but Court is very much a pro and makes his living playing in home games like these.  We showed up at the place around 10pm, and it looked like we were pulling into a police substation.  We were in the middle of South Charlotte, and after turning off the road onto a 50 foot driveway we came to a double chain link gate, locked, with barbed wire running the perimeter.  There were single story unmarked brick buildings to my right and left, and a packed parking lot beyond.  A Rastafarian dude who I think was named Hakoom walked out from the shadows, Court knew him, he opened the gate, and we pulled in and parked.

We walked to the door that said “Employees Only,” knocked, it buzzed, we walked in, three feet later hit another door with no handle, it was opened by Hakoom, and then we were standing at the foot of a 60′ hallway.  To our right was a game, the “front game”.  Turns out it was a 2-5 NL game.  The main guy/host/guy that cashed us out greeted Court, met me, and then gave me the tour.  I met Mary Jane the cute massage girl.  I met Watson, the also very cute food and beer chick.  I showed up at the place with a dude named Courtney and met a chick named Watson.  They wonder why the rest of the country thinks they’re backwards in the South.  We walk into the back, see the 11 handed 5-10-20 game, Court said it was bad news since 8 of the people in the game would be there all night and he was going to be third on the list.

So, I started getting worked on by Mary Jane to help my back through 25 days of motorcycle and 2 days of wakeboarding, and 15 minutes later they start up a new 2-5 game behind me.  Even through there was nothing relaxing about the torture she was putting my back through, it was a necessary pain and I didn’t want to quit, but the players filing behind my chair were making it annoying so I joined the game also.

The whole time I was getting tortured by Mary Jane I was also being entertained by one dude, who turns out later has never been to Vegas, explaining to another dude everything there is to know about poker and Vegas.  It was entertaining and annoying at the same time.  He sounded like an internet nerd, using every poker term possible splashed with phrases like “owning souls”, “vpip”, and “snap call”.

So he sits at the new game, and the kid just keeps on keepin’ on runnin’ his mouth.  He wasn’t being rude or anything, but he was giving Court and I his entire playbook and forcing us into the exchanged secret grin.  I asked him what his name was online, big mistake imo because it could have blown my cover, but fortunately he didn’t know the badbeatninja.  Turns out he plays exclusively on Ultimate Bet, told me his name, told me that he heavily multi-tables .50-1 nl, and many other things that insured Court and I would never lose any sort of pot to him barring some cooler.  At one point he was telling his apprentice about how he floated a guy, I said, “What’s a float?”  And I gotta give him credit for his answer, “It’s better than a sink.”

So he gets moved to the front game, Court and I giggle a bit more, and eventually I move up front also.  To my left are two young-ish dudes, that dude, and the youngest dude, all with decently deep stacks, and all still talking shop like it was 2+2.  I made some little rebuking comment along the lines of asking why they talk strategy so much at the table, and then I played this hand against one of the two non 2+2 frequenting players at the table.

I open early to $15 with QhJh.  He calls in the SB.  Flop Ts8h3s.  Check, I bet $20, he calls.  Turn Qc.  Check, check.  River 5d.  He bets $55.

“I call.”
“One pair.”
“Which pair?”
Shrugs, “Small pair.”
“That’s good news.  Which one?”
“Pair of fives.”

He shows me one five.
“I can beat that, but I still want to know what you have,” you ****tard, because the only ****ing way you’re going to get to see both of my cards is if I get to see both of yours, because I caught your ass bluffing and I want to know what you ****ing tried to do it with, and I also want to know how the **** you show up with a pair of fives.  He shows me the 54o, I table my hand and drag the pot, and just couldn’t help myself and say, “Nice flop.”

That’s the sick part though.  If I hadn’t hit one of ten cards on the turn or river, he probably wins that pot.  He was the fish in the game too.  Fish aren’t supposed to float, even if it’s out of position.

Court and I left the game shortly thereafter, simply because it wasn’t good.  We weren’t going to lose much barring coolers, but we weren’t going to be winning much either.  While driving home and thinking about the game, I really think those kids have ruined that game.  One, it’s pretty annoying to listen to them talk, even though I know what they’re talking about.  I can’t imagine what it’s like for the casual player, which are supposed to be filling these games (according to Court).  I’m an ok player and I didn’t want to play there anymore, and I’m sure that plenty of their fish have thought the same thing.  They just sat back and talked about eight, twelve, and twenty tabling online poker all day, threads on two plus two, and analyzing hand after hand, explaining why they did things, and damnit, most people playing poker that are “fish” aren’t dumb people, especially the higher up you move in stakes.  The money has to come from somewhere.  So, they’re either going to learn, or not come back to the game.

People wonder why poker has gotten tougher.  I know that I’m guilty of it too, and I know that I need to spend more time talking about fly fishing and motorcycles than about poker at the table.  Let’s make this game fun again, stop making people better for free, and insure that we can remain unemployed for a long time.

Peace and good luck,

Devo

Living Las Vegas

Saturday, August 15, 2009 - Brandon Cantu

After the World Series of Poker, Las Vegas seems to get back to normal, at least what is considered to be normal for those of us who live here.  The hype of the tournament subsides and most people leave town to get away.  Before I even begin to make some moves, I need some R &R.

My friend Dave from my home town came to town.  He lives and works in Charlottesville, VA.  With some extra time on my hands after the tournament and a friend in town, I found reasons to get bottle service at one of my favorite clubs in town, XS.  My neighbor and good friend, Jeff Madsen came along to join us.  This club with its ambiance and cabanas were perfect place to unwind with some good friends.  I must say, I have never met a night at XS I didn’t like.

After enjoying the table and friends for a bit at XS, I decided to make my way over to the pool area of XS where tables of black jack are set up.  I played for about an hour and turned $1200 to $6000.  I seem to do well on XS nights for whatever reason.

In my downtime I also went saw a movie, Bruno.  Sacha Baren Cohen is hilarious in this movie and I must say is a great follow up to one of his other movies I enjoyed, Borat.  Bruno became an instant classic in my book.  I liked it almost as much as The Hangover, which may be one of the best comedies of all-time.

Three of my favorite things to do here in my free time here in Las Vegas are watching Howard Stern on Demand, smoking Hookah, and hanging out at my pool.  My time since WSOP has significantly consisted of those three things:

The Howard Stern show on demand is by far my favorite show.  I watch it religiously on demand.  His antics and regulars make any day a good one.  I need to find a reason to get a request to appear on that show.  Maybe, I should start a scandal???  Just playing.  Recently, regular Howard guest, Blue Iris passed away of a heart attack.  Very sad.

If I’m not at home or playing poker, most likely the next spot to check for me is Paymon’s hookah spot.  It’s a local favorite and a place I sometimes tend to consider a 2nd home.  There is something so relaxing about sitting on Persian couches, eating hummus and smoking the hookah flavor of the month.  Often times this is the starting point before heading out for the night.  Great place.  Good times.

What is summer in Las Vegas without being poolside?  Last year I order these oversized chaise beds for hanging out by my pool.  It makes my pool feel like a casino resort cabana in my backyard.  Having friends over, good food, gin and beers poolside are all signs life is good.

From the clubs and gambling to hookah and hanging out by my pool.  My unwinding time after the tournament has proved to be amazing.  I love living in Las Vegas.

Another Series Ends

Monday, July 6, 2009 - Gene Bromberg

The end of the World Series came early for Brandon Cantu as well, as he was eliminated just before the last break of the evening. Cantu made a move against a player who’d flopped a set of Jacks on an A-J-6, and after the call Brandon was drawing at a mircle with Ks-8s. A Queen fell on the turn, giving Brandon a gutshot draw, and as he screamed “Ten! Ten!!” the dealer placed an Ace on the river that gave the 50,000-chip pot to his opponent. And not long after the period was placed at the end of Cantu’s World Series when he was all in on the flop against a player who turned the nut flush.

But his disappointment at being eliminated today should be tempered by the fact that he had a fantastic Series. He finished second in a $1,500 No-Limit Hold-Em event, losing out on his second bracelet in cruel fashion when he was heads-up with Ray Foley. But he rebounded from that bitter defeat a few days later by racing out to a huge chip lead in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha/8 tournament and then coming from behind to defeat Lee Watkinson to finally capture his second bracelet. A shot of that earlier, happier time:

Is P0ker J0 ready for Vegas – or is Vegas ready for P0ker Jo??

Friday, July 3, 2009 - P0ker J0

Wow – well it has been FAR too long since I have posted.  I have been gearing up for the WSOP but also managed to take a week off with NO access to technology.  I headed down to the Dominican Republic and enjoyed a merlot or 10 on the beach! I actually left my Blackberry in the safe in the room and just kicked back – not a care in the world.

But now I’m bing bang back to reality. The WSOP is in full force and two of my newest pros are kicking some serious ass!!  Check out Matt Graham and Brandon Cantu – two new pros – two new bracelets.  I’m just so proud (shed a tear here).  So all eyes will be on Mr. Hellmuth this year as he makes his big arrival on July 5th.  If you are in the area on the 5th, he will be making the entrances of all entrances.  It just seems that each year gets bigger and better.  Aren’t I the lucky one that gets to help the Poker Brat get dressed every year.  Some chicks would just kill for my job :)

UB is sponsoring some kick ass celebrities into the Ante Up for Africa event on July 2nd.  You can expect to see the never boring Charles Barkley sporting the UB brand – as well as Herschel Walker (from Celebrity Apprentice), Dean Cain (Yes – Superman!!) among others.  It should be a great event for a great cause!!  I only wish I was able to land the great Jon Bon Jovi!

Well it seems the WSOP is all consuming.  I cannot wait to hit sin city and meet some folks that I have only chatted with on the phone, and hook up with old friends that I haven’t seen in a while.  Let there be fun, let there be laughter, let there be merlot but most of all – let there be copious amounts of hairspray!!

P0ker J0 out!  Next BLOG comes to you from Sin City!!

xoxo
