Aruba vrs Hitler

Monday, October 26, 2009 - Annie Duke

So I have officially processed my untimely demise in the Aruba Classic. Let me give you a little back story though. In the 7 years that I have played that event, I have made the money ONCE. That is right. One time. Now there is a really good reason for that. I generally go down to Aruba with my kids and the thought of staying inside playing poker for the whole trip when my kids are having a blast horseback riding and tubing and whatnot without me doesn’t really work for me. So I play some pretty bad poker when I am in Aruba generally because I am secretly, well not so secretly, trying to get myself knocked out of the event.

But not this year. This year I resolved that I was actually going to try really hard. Last year I had to leave before the event even started because Celebrity Apprentice conflicted with the main event down there. So I headed down to Aruba for exactly three days and then left in a shroud of mystery. I had signed a confidentiality agreement so I couldn’t tell anyone why I was leaving which made for some pretty interesting rumors. I did have to assure a few people that nothing was wrong with my family and there was no emergency while still being coy about why I left. Anyway, we all know how Celebrity Apprentice turned out. I am still trying to decide if it was worth it to leave paradise abruptly for 5 weeks of being called worse than Hitler by Joan Rivers.

Anyway, after having to leave last year I realized that I really missed the opportunity to play and so this year came in with great resolve to play my heart out. I showed up relatively on time and proceeded to get dealt the best cards of my life. In the first two levels I got AA 7 times, KK twice and QQ twice. I am not kidding. I really got dealt those starting hands. So of course I ended the two levels with 4K of the 15K starting chips. As expected really. I was either going to have all the chips on the planet or 4K. When I came back for level three I managed to flop top two with AJ suited vs 99 on an AJ9 board. Oops. That sent me to the rail.

So I managed to hit the parlay: I wasted another year of the Aruba Classic getting knocked out on Day 1 when I was actually really trying (proof of the trying part: I managed to still have 4K in chips after getting all those hands cracked) and I wasted the best run of cards I will ever have. Sheesh.

Now, once I got knocked out I decided to make the best of it and took the opportunity to go tubing with Joe. We got on one of those two man tubes and were having a complete blast because we had a driver who was really trying to create huge wakes to buck us off the tube. Anyone who has gotten thrown off a tube knows that it usually the best part of tubing. Joe and I were really hanging on, though, so the driver was creating bigger and bigger wakes to drag us over until finally he made a wake so big that there was no holding on the tube to stay on because the tube itself was flipping over.

So Joe is on my right and the tube is flipping right so Joe kind of turned over and was heading face down into the ocean below me as I was flipping over him when his heel snapped up on the way into the water and caught me right in the neck. That snapped my head back pretty bad and smashed my lower jaw into my upper jaw in a way that really sent shockwaves up the left side of my face. That was aside from the pain I was experiencing from having just been kicked really hard in the neck. So now I land in the ocean and I am just sobbing in there and Joe isn’t sure right away whether or not I am laughing or crying so he is laughing at first. Then he realizes I am actually in hysterics and helps drag me back onto the tube so the driver can take us in really slowly back to the dock. I say really slowly because every bit of turbulence we hit sent waves of pain through my skull. By that night the inside of my throat had really swelled up which took about two days to go down before it was comfortable to swallow again.

So I got kicked in the head by the cards in the tournament then kicked in the head by Joe in a freak tubing accident. Come to think of it, getting called worse than Hitler for 5 weeks doesn’t sound so bad after all.

Birthday gifts…

Sunday, September 13, 2009 - Annie Duke

So this weekend I was supposed to be going to the Sports Legends Challenge down in the Bahamas. Believe it or not, I was not particularly excited to go (except that I was going to get to see Herschel Walker down there). October 3rd is the start of Aruba so I really wasn’t too stoked about heading all the way to Bahamas from LA and then two weeks later doing the exact same thing basically, heading all the way from LA to Aruba and back. That is a lot of travel and, let’s face it, Aruba just totally kicks ass so that is really the trip I look forward to every year anyway. It is not like anything in the Bahamas could top it. So I really felt like while I would probably have a blast once I got down there I was just, you know, dreading the trip. I mean dreading the travel. Plus, it meant I would be taking the ten hour plane trip on my birthday. Ugh. Not the best way to spend it I would venture to say.

Well, someone was smiling on me because the Sports Legends Challenge got postponed! Yes! My weekend was freed up! And my birthday didn’t have to be a travel day anymore. I immediately started making other plans and the plan I came up with was to take Joe to Memphis. That might sound like a weird choice but I gave Joe a trip to Memphis for his 40th birthday. He really wanted to see Memphis plus he loves BBQ. I mean that boy really loves BBQ. And Memphis is the town to visit if you love that stuff. So because I love Joe I said I would take him to Memphis to eat as much BBQ he could in the space of 3 days and we could see Graceland while we were there.

But here is the problem, I gave him this trip for his 40th birthday, right? But he is 41! I mean what kind of crappy girlfriend am I that I gave him this trip a year and a half ago and am just now getting around to actually taking him? Granted, we were going to go last fall but The Celebrity Apprentice got in the way of that but seriously, I suck. So as soon as SLC got cancelled I was like we are going to Memphis!

So armed with a list of the top ten barbeque places in Memphis (http://www.fabhotdogs.com/FD_FoodMenu1.html) we are heading out on Saturday. Sunday is my birthday so I think we are going to hit Graceland that day and do a nice restaurant that night but, honestly, the best birthday present for me right now is not feeling like an asshole for not getting around to his big 40th birthday gift. Monkey off back now :)

Mourning a great man

Thursday, August 20, 2009 - Annie Duke

This week is a sad one for me.  Ken Bacon, President of Refugees International, passed away this week. Ken was an extraordinary individual with an amazing passion for finding lasting solutions to the refugee problem around the world. He was a Wall Street Journal reporter who became chief Pentagon spokesman under Clinton. He joined RI in 2001.
I met Ken Bacon in October, during the filming of The Celebrity Apprentice. Because Ante Up for Africa was in the process of becoming a 501c3 while the Apprentice was filming, I couldn’t play directly for my own charity. So I played for RI which is aligned in its mission with the mission of AUFA. At my first meeting with Ken I presented him with a $245K check from winning a task on Celebrity Apprentice and to say his reaction was reserved would be a drastic understatement. I was a little taken aback until I figured out the he was just an incredible sincere individual. We ended up chatting for a very long time about the issues in Sudan and Darfur and I could see the passion and real commitment to the issue that this man had.
I saw Ken a few times after that, once at the filming of the final task of the Apprentice where without Ken’s help I don’t think I could have pulled the auction off. The last time I saw him was for the 30th Anniversary Gala of Refugees International where I presented that $245K check again to a much greater reaction.
Ken brought a passion to the cause that I hope to emulate. We should all be so lucky to have someone like Ken Bacon fighting for us and the things we believe in.  I am truly lucky to have known him, if even for such a brief time. I am certainly a better person for the time I got with him.

Great start!!!

Saturday, June 27, 2009 - Brandon Cantu

Well ladies and gentlemen; I have officially completed a deal to become UltimateBet’s newest sponsored pro.  It is an exciting step for me and I am thrilled to be a part UB, a team that features both Phil Hellmuth and Annie Duke.  I believe UB has the best days ahead of them and I am certain that, not only do I feel I have much to contribute, I will be appreciated as an important asset to the team.
I attended Annie Duke’s charity event – “Sucking Out On The Rivers.”  The event took place at the Hard Rock and obviously was a great way to raise more awareness and money following Annie’s Celebrity Apprentice run.  The event was attended by pro players showing support.  Andy Bloch, Joe Reitman, Joe Sebok, Howard Lederer, and now fellow UB teammates, Hollywood Dave and Matt Graham showed up, to name a few.  The abundance of Annie impersonators and chill environment were added bonuses to the already good cause.  Fun was had by all.  I am a fan of the Hard Rock poker room.  The bar is close and television sets are above most tables.  As I stepped out for a phone call, I even spotted Phil Ivey throwing some dice.
All and all, it was the perfect day to announce that I was officially a member of UB.  For me, joining a team is more than just putting on a patch.  I want to be an active team member throughout.  This event gave me an opportunity to do just that.  From the red carpet to conduct some interviews to hanging out with some of the UB Pros, it was engaging.  It was the ideal event that provided some excitement versus just a standard press release announcing my involvement.
Earlier, while I was working through my options for pro sponsorship, I strongly considered UB despite an unfortunate situation that had taken place.  I must admit, I felt in the past as though UB handled things poorly.  However, after spending time and working with Annie, my opinions have changed.  I trust and know that she is monitoring all of UB and am confident that her involvement continues to translate over to other players’ opinions of the site.  Not to mention Phil Hellmuth is also a friend.  I know that both of these players would not continue to associate themselves to the brand should issues still remain potentially threatening.  I believe UB has turned the corner and is committed to excellence.  As I said, the best years of UB are ahead throughout online poker and I feel good about being a part of it as it happens.
As I look back on my first day on the clock for UB, I can recall a success: a great event showing UB Pros commitment to charitable causes, fellow UB Pros showing up to support and the fine environment throughout.  This is a great start to what should be a very good year for both me and my UB team.

Hello fellow UBers…

Thursday, June 18, 2009 - Shawn Rice

I know the WSOP is well underway and I had to do a little business before heading out and I will be out there this weekend off and on til the main event. If at all possible please try and come by on June 29th , UB will be having a monster party at Studio 54 at the MGM. Let me tell you if you have not been before the UB party’s ROCK! Its great to see old friends and meet many of the players you play online with often. I just got a call from Gary “Debo34″ Debernardi and he invited me to a Stone Temple Pilots concert at the Palms on July 2nd, we seen them there last year with Scott Ian and Pearl Aday and a few other friends, It was a killer show and we all hung out at the bar after the show and tons of people wanted pics and autographs from Scott… he handles that stuff so well. I have seen my share of jerk who hate to be bothered when in public, Scott was way more than happy to take the pics and all. He is a very down to earth type of person who has a strong passion for the game we all love and has been kicking ass online. In fact he won the Sunday 200k a couple of months back. I won it in December and he had to go and show me up! I am super happy for him. If you go and read his blog he writes about being really sick that weekend and having to miss a family reunion.. It’s no fluke I know Scott well and his game is really solid. I can honestly say he is the most improved player I know over the past year or year and a half.
After the WSOP I plan on playing lots online and getting ready for Aruba. That’s always the best trip of the year, I am the type of guy who never really gets sick and when I do it’s really bad. I was really sick last year there for too many of the days there. I even missed Phil’s party in bed with the cold sweats and running a very high temperature. I can’t wait to make it all up and bring your camera as this will be filled with a lifetime full of memories. Last year Annie had to leave a lil early and head to New York to film the Celebrity Apprentice. I must admit I was addicted to the show, I loved them in years past and this last season was the best ever. I so hated the ending as it was given to one of Donald’s pals. Annie was so deserving and I am so sick about the results I know I can’t stomach to watch another season after feeling punked.
I have been pretty busy doing some private poker lessons and let me tell you. You better be on your toes with the questions I get. They are very very deep type questions. I think it’s a really smart thing to do to try and better your game. I’ve been playing lots of Pot Limit Omaha 8 or better  live in Amarillo and I have learned a lot from the local guys here. Mostly from a player named Nathan Wiesner who sometimes comes over to the house to play online tourneys and lets me watch him and ask tons of questions. Last time I seen Annie I asked her a few questions that helped me tons in that game. I feel like my PLO game is very solid and has been for years as that’s the game I was first taught how to play about 20 years ago. It would seem that it’s not hard to adjust from one game to the other but on a higher level it’s played very different. I took forward to learning it as that’s where the money is at around here in the local games. West Texas has been famous for having good players over the years and let me tell you there are still many here. I just know it’s a matter of time before you will hear of them, they just need a little volume to get these great results, They are already kicking butt online and play live really well.
I have also been playing a lil golf on the par 3 course that was formally owned my Amarillo Slim with a lot of the guys I regularly play cards with. It’s great exercise and I even hit a hole in one about 6 weeks back, let me tell you it was all 100% luck. I know many good players who have never hit one including my dad who used to play 6 days a week and was close to a scratch golfer. I know better than play the bigger course as the last time I was out there I lose a lil over $10,000 to some guys from a surounding town. I played in a scramble and I was never any help to my partner. I am hoping to match up again so I have lots of incentive to better my golf game.
Come by and say hello at the WSOP and hope you can make the party in Vegas, If not win your seat to Aruba, It’s the time of your life. Hope to see many of you soon and if you have any poker questions, please write into to “Ask a pro” and we will try our best to get your game back on a winning course.
Proud UB Team Member
Shawn Rice

Vidblog Madness!

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 - HollywoodDave

OK soooooo this week I’ve got something different for ya… here’s what I’ve been up to lately!

First, for an update on my first week at the WSOP, check out this vid I shot while kickin’ it with my girl MB at the Circus Circus Adventuredome the other day:

Then, here’s some footage I shot at the Celebrity Apprentice finale with Andy Bloch, Beth Shak, Howard Lederer & the rest of Annie Duke’s family.  Of course we all know by now that Donald ended up totally hosing Annie in the end but chekkit out nonetheless:

Speaking of Annie Duke, here’s the ‘Sucking out on the Rivers’ charity tourney we all played at the Hard Rock last week…special cameo by UB’s newest pro player, Brandon Cantu:

Phew

Sunday, May 24, 2009 - Annie Duke

Phew—thank god that whole Celebrity Apprentice thing is over. I feel like I got sucked into a vacuum and was hardly able to get anything done over the past phew months, much less focus on my main passion in life: poker! Well, I have come back up for air just in time to get happily drowned by The World Series of Poker! Yay! It is a week away and I am super excited for this year perhaps because I have felt so disconnected this spring with all The Apprentice shenanigans. So…what’s in store for me this coming month? Poker poker poker!
To start, I am going to be teaching 3 different WSOP Academies this month. The first one is a Ladies Only camp on June 5th and 6th. This will be my third year in a row kicking off the WSOP with the Ladies camp. The very next weekend I am going to be teaching an open camp (men and women) that will focus mainly on tournament strategy but, honestly, is really just a pretty complete strategic guide to No Limit Hold’em, tournaments or cash games. The folks over at WSOP Academy just like to label camps as tournaments or cash games. Personally I hate labels, so there ya go.
The camp I am most excited about is The Main Event Primer which is the big camp they put on every year right before The Main Event. New this year, you can win a VIP package to this camp right here on UltimateBet.com. http://www.ultimatebet.com/poker-promotion/shuffle-up-and-learn The package includes a private dinner with me and Phil Hellmuth!
You can find out about all these cool upcoming camps at http://www.wsopacademy.com/
Aside from all that teaching, I am going to be playing a ton of events this year starting with the $40K buy-in No Limit Hold’em event to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the WSOP.  I was really undecided about playing this baby because I think the turnout might be kind of low and I honestly think I am just going to be sitting there facing the best NLH players in the world. Until a few days ago I was really on the fence about this one. What swung me? TV of course! ESPN is only televising 4 events this year and I am not even eligible for one of them (the Main Event champions tournament)! So what is a girl to do? I guess sail off for $40K against great NLH players!
Wish me luck!

Gettin Ready for WSOP, baybee!

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 - HollywoodDave

Soooo….finally back on the west coast from last week’s Celebrity Apprentice debacle & gearing up for the WSOP!!  Hard to believe its just over a week away and then it is 6 weeks of madness — and, of course, bracelets!  The past 2 years I have had less than stellar results, but have always felt like I played well.  Maybe this is the year I can trade in playing well for making some sick cashes instead lol…

So this final week is some much needed downtime, which means spending some quality time with my dad & bros, as well as catching up on all the season finales of my fave tivoed shows: 24, Lie to Me, and despite not watching as much as I did last season, American Idol!  I am blown away by how much of a total rockstar Adam Lambert is, but after last week’s highway robbery by Joan Rivers, I am not placing any bets on the outcome of Idol…lets just say that my tenuous faith in the moral decency of primetime reality television programming has been shaken to its core & I don’t know how long it will take me to trust in it once again!

I’ve been playing online a lot more lately, but mostly lower stakes this week to force myself to focus on the fundamentals of poker once again.  Sometimes the hardest game of all to beat, especially online, is a full 5/10 ring game — all of the elements of the WSOP masses are there: the loose callers, the chasers, the semi-pros, and the tight & bluffable weak spots.  I’m trying to experience a wider range of styles so that I am completely prepared for the crush of players starting next week at the Rio, rather than the primarily uber-aggro action freaks you find more prevalently at the higher levels.

Other than that just been kickin it with my girl MB & loving life  :)   Its been awhile since I’ve been so completely happy just sharing my life with someone & that is exactly what I’ve been doing for a few wonderful months now.  And amazing how much better my poker game has been — not only the WSOP Circuit ring, but a bunch of deep cashes online as well!  So the moral of the story this week is that HD is calm, relaxed, and centered… and ready to kick some ass starting next week!  Make sure you guys add me on twitter so you can get all the moment-by-moment action at the tables @ www.Twitter.com/Hollywood_Dave

Til then –

A comedian? A comedian? Seriously!!!!

Friday, May 15, 2009 - P0ker J0

Well hello UB Land

Wow – I just have to start with Celebrity Apprentice.  It’s all over the net how appalled most people are that Joan Rivers walked away with the title. NBC even has a poll on their website. Check this out - some of the comments made me giggle. Well I can tell you it was even more dramatic to watch it all pan out live!  I was lucky enough to be in the audience of the finale and what an experience that was.  It was cool to actually stand by and see all these players that I have been watching on TV over the last few months.  Clint Black is way shorter in real life than I thought and Donald’s hair is even worse close up!  Wow he and I could surely have a long conversation about hair if given the chance. Melissa seemed as out of control in person as on the show and Joan’s face moved less in person.  All in all – a great experience with a lot of money raised for charity, but I won’t lie – I think the Donald made a big mistake!

So Mr. Hellmuth has decided to grace the Canadians with his presence eh?  He is currently up in Canada playing in the Canadian Poker Tour event in Calgary.  He even was awarded the White Hat in Calgary.  So you may be asking white hat eh? Well it is not just any white hat, it is almost like getting the key to the city.  So I guess they must think he’s a big deal eh?  He is doing well in the heads up and we are cheering him on from the sidelines.  Go Phil go!

Rumor has it that Players Sports Bar will be a buzz this weekend with some of our favourite UBers in attendance for the annual poker party.  I’m sure we will hear all about it from the Wisconsin networks.  I hope you all have fun and don’t forget to have a merlot for Jo!

So I guess the WSOP is upon us.  There will be drama, there will be entrances and I’m sure there will be laughter.  Mr. Hellmuth will be making his big entrance on July 5th and Ms. Duke just may have a funky entrance of her own. Stay tuned for details.  The UB party is at Studio 54 on June 29th so make sure you drop by if you are in Vegas.  I will share more details with you next week but UB will have a presence there and there will be opportunities to come and meet Team UB in person.  Hope to see you there.

Well as I close off here – I reflect on a busy week and wish I was on a beach somewhere like my buddy Ryan.  Nothing better than looking out your window (even if you are working) and watching the ocean. A girl can dream right??

Until next week……

P0ker J0 out!

‘The Donald is Dead to Me’

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 - HollywoodDave

You know what?  I got three words for you guys right now: F**k Donald Trump.  That’s right, you heard it here first. I just went to the taping of the final episode of Celebrity Apprentice — which by now everyone has seen live on TV — and I couldn’t feel more disgusted, appalled, and cheated.  Not just for my friend Annie Duke, who put on one helluva competition over the past several months, but for everyone supporting the show over the entire season who were given a completely fabricated, rigged ending.  Total bullshit.

Now look, I know I’m supposed to defend Annie and get all up in arms over Joan winning the show, but its so much more than that.  Even if I didn’t know Duke (or play poker myself), I would still feel the exact same way.  The bottom line is, there was absolutely NO justification for Joan winning, except for plain and simple nepotism!  In every single way, Annie outplayed Joan (and everyone else) on the show, and was robbed of her rightful victory in the end.

Annie raised 3x the money Joan did.  More than anyone in the history of the show, by the way.  She won more tasks than Joan did.  She was never once in danger of being fired, throughout the entire season.  She put up with CONSTANT unfounded vicious personal attacks on herself, her friends, her family, and her career by Joan — not only on camera, but in the boardroom as well.  At no point in the season did Donald ever tell her she was out of line or think she was any less of a ‘role model’ for such despicable behavior.

Joan — in the boardroom! — said Annie was worse than Hitler!  That she was beneath Joan!  That Annie would spit on the ground and drown her own mother!  That all of Annie’s friends — the ones who had donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to CHARITY — were ‘worse than trash’ and in the Mafia!  That simply cuz Annie had revised her opinion of Brande halfway thru the season, she was a liar and (this one courtesy of Joan’s daughter Melissa) a ‘whore pit viper!’ And when confronted about the ‘worse than Hitler’ comment by Donald, responded only that Annie was actually WORSE than Hitler!

This is the woman who won Celebrity Apprentice, people.  The ‘role model’ espoused by Donald Trump, who raised less money than Annie did (on the last task as well as throughout the season), won fewer challenges than Annie did, and even on the very last task — got both her and Annie’s party planner to quit the show due to despicable behavior captured NOT ONLY by NBC’s own cameras, but actually described on the planner’s website itself — and then Joan LIED to Donald’s face about it in the live finale, and he never considered it in his deliberations.

That’s just the surface, too.  I’ve worked for years in TV production, and can tell you from experience that that last show was most definitely produced to provide an excuse for this ridiculous scam.  Notice that in the entire 3 hour finale, only the last THREE MINUTES was reserved for Joan and Annie to acutally talk?  And that whenever Annie tried to get into any of these substantive truths, Joan would just shout over her until Donald cut them off and made his own decision, without any deliberation?  How practically the entire final episode leading up to Annie’s firing was intentionally produced to make Joan look sympathetic and Annie unstable?  How the clip reel on Joan’s charity was a real tearjerker, while Annie’s looked more like a documentary, despite there being very obvious emotional components to the work they do?

Finally, Joan was picked without any reasoning given.  Just that she had accomplished more of the criteria on the final task, despite failing in every other regard.  Despite getting Annie’s party planner fired.  Despite lying to Donald about it in a manner that he would truly have to be stupid to not see, as all the evidence was edited into the final cut of the episode that had just aired.

It gets even worse.  More truths: Donald’s sister in law is on the board of Joan’s charity.  Joan had just signed a contract to produce a show with Apprentice executive producer Mark Burnett.  All of the returning celebrities were polled ahead of time to see who they were supporting, and (except for Jesse James, who refused to give and answer) only the ones who responded ‘Joan’ were given a chance to express their views.  And returning champ Piers was actually instructed to say he thought Joan should win.  All to make it look like this great miscarriage of justice was somehow justified.

So, that’s it.  I’m pissed.  And will never watch another Apprentice episode ever again.  Not that I am terribly surprised that reality TV is ultimately rigged, but that after being so absolutely devoted & deserving, my friend Annie Duke was not only played, but slowrolled as well.   For 7 seasons now, instead of ‘firing’ someone, on the final episode the Donald turns towards someone and instead says, ‘You’re HIRED!’  What kind of sick fuck, then, does it take to turn towards Annie and say, ‘You know what I’m going to say Annie?  You’re — FIRED!’  Fuck him 6 days a week and twice on Sundays.  This wasn’t a bad beat or horrible one outer, Trump straight up dealt off the bottom of the deck — and still rubbed it in her face!

There ya go.  My Celebrity Apprentice finale experience for ya, no holds barred.  gg sir.

-hd.
