Wish You Didn’t Have to Go

Friday, June 12, 2009 - Gene Bromberg

Getting to a World Series of Poker final table is very hard to do. As is staying there once you’ve arrived. Once the $10,000 No Limit Deuce-to-Seven tournament reached eight players they chose to consolidate down to one table instead of playing at two four-handed tables. And Michael Binger, desperately short-stacked, moved in for his last 56,000.

John Juanda, sitting directly to Michael’s right, quickly called, and when it was folded around Michael had to decide what to do next.”Wow…” he said, shifting in his seat and obviously not thrilled that it was Juanda he had to figure out. “Wow,” he said again, before deciding to draw two. Juanda showed his hand, a 10-8-6-4-2, and Binger revealed a 9-7-2. But the first card he’d drawn was a nine, pairing him up, and that was that. Michael was out in 8th place, having been eliminated after the first hand dealt at the final table.

The Work’s Cut Out

Friday, June 12, 2009 - Gene Bromberg

The $10,000 No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven World Championship will play today until a champion is crowned, and still in the running is UltimateBet’s Michael Binger. They’re down to ten players (and they’ll play five-handed until the final table of seven is reached) and Michael is second from the bottom in chips, but it’s a no-limit game, one double up could provide all the momentum required to power Binger to his first WSOP bracelet. Play will resume at 2pm and will no doubt draw a big crowd on the rail for this star-studded, action-packed gambling game.

Trench Warfare

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 - Gene Bromberg

I mentioned before that the $1,500 Shootout No-Limit event makes for a strange day of poker. Most of the winners have been decided hours ago. Some players had locked up their seat on Day 2 when other tables were still seven- or eight-handed. And still there are a number of heads-up and three-way battles to determine who will advance and cash, and who will have wasted an afternoon by coming in a distant second place.

Things are busier in the Brasilia Room, where Day 2 of the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. event has just paused for the dinner break, with Team UB’s Michael Binger in the middle of the pack with 88 players remaning (48 cash).

A few of the players in the $3K H.O.R.S.E. have also registered for the $10,000 No-Limit Deuce-to-Seven Draw, including…Michael Binger, who raced across the aisle to take his seat in this high-rolling event, which features the typical Who’s Who you find in these $10K events. Among the more august members of today’s field is the legendary Billy Baxter, who has five bracelets…FIVE…in this very event.
