The Race for the UBOC Poker League Winner

Saturday, January 24, 2009 - P0ker H0

The UBOC’s have finally came to a close.  It was an exciting week and a half of poker, especially because I was in the UBOC League.  For those of you who don’t know, ubpokerleagues.com hosted a UBOC League where each team bought in for 1k and the 3 teams with the highest amount of points at the end of the UBOC would split the prize pool.  We ended up getting 15 teams for the UBOC, and 20 for the MINI-UBOC.  I partnered up with Shawn Rice and we were in it to the very last day.  Wiscomurray’s team led the league in first everday but one, but on the last day lot’s of drama ensued.

The way the points are calculated are the higher the buyin the more points you will receive, and the deeper you go.  So with the majority of UBOC’s being $100-$200’s and the last event a 1k, you can see how it would be easy to gain ground in the last tournament of the series.  Well, thats exactly what the last place team did.  The last day Wiscomurray’s team was in first with 1600 points, and 2nd with 1400.  The 15th place team had 600 points.  It would be a slight possibility for the bottom teams to catch up, but the last place team needed to outright win the UBOC to win the league by only 24 points.  If they finished 2nd in the UBOC 1k main event they would get 850 points and fall significantly short.

Wouldn’t you know, I checked the lobby with 25 left and there they were.  One of the guys on the last place team, DOUBLEDAVE22 to be exact, was still in the tournament.  Not only that but NEDDYFLANDERS was still in, and his team was in need of the points.  I think NEDDYFLANDERS could have finished 4th or better to win the league.  Anyway, I couldn’t believe my eyes.  Everytime DOUBLEDAVE22 was all-in, he got called, and when he was called his opponent had at most 2 outs.  He played the short stack really well and found himself at the final table.  When I say he played the short stack well, I really mean it.  He was 2nd to last in chips from 20 players down to the final table.  At the final table he found himself 4 handed, 2nd in chips.  I couldnt believe it.  Could the last place league team really pull this off?  I mean, they had to WIN the UBOC 1k Main Event, to win the league.  Anything less, and it wasnt even close to placing in top 3 teams.

DOUBLEDAVE22 shoved all in KQ and was called by Ac10c.  The flop came 2 clubs 9 high.  It wasn’t looking good for Dave, when bam, the turn came a non club Queen.   Than bam the river a 7c, and Dave’s amazing run had come to an end.  I have to admit, it was really fun watching other people play and have a reason to care what happens in the hands they are involved in.  The ubpokerleagues.com website adds a new flavor to poker, and I really recommend it.  Not only that, it helped me play my best poker I believe.  Some people feel it’s easier to let themselves down than others, and for that reason I think people try harder.  Give it a try and Gl everyone.

Ultimate Online Championship

Thursday, January 15, 2009 - P0ker H0

The Ultimate Online Championships started last Friday, and so far it’s been a really good ride. Event #1 was a PLO tournament, and I really am not that experienced in it. I must say though, I have fallen in love with PLO. It was such a nice reprieve from the normal NL tournaments I play all the time. I focused really hard and found myself at the Final Table. 7 handed and I get dealt aqq2 with the ace and 2 of spades in early position. I decided to limp because the table has been so aggressive, and I was sure to get re-raised. Sure enough the guy to my immediate left raises. It folds around to me, and I’m thinking he probably has kk or aa, so I decided to see a flop and see if it would be bad for his hand. The flop came A59, and at this point I’m thinking he probably doesn’t have AA, because I have one, so I’m thinking more towards KK now. I check and he bets enough where if I shove, he has to call. I shoved and he had AKK7, and I was eliminated. My read was on, but unfortunately he had the other Ace to have me outkicked and I finished in 7th place for $3100. None the less I had a lot of fun.

The next day, was UBOC Event #2 and it was a $320 NL and although I was eliminated fairly quickly in it, I actually won the MINI-UBOC event #2 that coincided with it. It felt really good to outlast 400 something players trying to win the title. The final prize was $3300 so overall it’s been a great UBOC so far.

There has been some added excitement to the UBOC’s this year with the introduction of www.ubpokerleagues.com. It’s a website that takes a designated group of tournaments and scores them like a league. You pick a partner and try to outscore other teams and win the side prize pools that are offered. Currently my team is in 3rd place of the UBOC League, and 2nd of the MINI-UBOC League. We would be crushing until Wiscomurray got 2nd last night in the UBOC #4 $530 NL event. There are still a lot of tournies left in the league and plenty of time to catch up though. I really recommend playing these leagues. They add a whole new dimension and incentive to play good poker. The UBOC Leagues are closed, but you can sign up for Low, Mid, and Highstakes leagues that run every week. Be sure to check it out.

Gl to Everyone who plays the UBOC’s and Bad luck to everyone who plays the UBOC League.

It is UBOC time

Saturday, January 10, 2009 - Debo34

If you haven’t heard, it is the start of UBOC. For 10 days UB will be hosting a series of tournaments. Along with the UBOC there will also be the same tournament with a smaller buy in called mini UBOC at the same time. This is the first time for the mini, and I think it was an awesome idea and should be a lot of fun that can involve the small to mid level player.

This year I am really ready for this. I was able to win the satellite package for both UBOC and mini UBOC called the kitchen sink package. This put me in every event for both. I was lucky enough to win the UBOC package on my first try for $165. The mini took me a couple of tries, but all in all it cost me less that $200 to get into every event for both UBOC and mini UBOC. I am really excited for a chance at a lot of money for very little investment.

For the past week or so I have limited my multi table tournament schedule knowing that I will have 10 straight days of it starting tomorrow. I wanted to come in fresh and ready to sit and focus for 12 hours a day. With as much poker as I play I feel like I have to prepare myself for a long series and not get burned out too early. Boy how I wish they had online poker when I was 22 years old.

One other thing I am really looking forward to is a league competition I am entered into for both regular and min UBOC. You can find out all the information on this at ubpokerleagues.com. This site is really cool, and I think once everyone catches on will be a huge success. This isn’t just for UBOC; they have weekly leagues for all level of players. For the UBOC league I was able to partner up with a great player, C00lhandnuke. Shawn was on the Best damn Poker show 2 which airs next week on FSN. He is a great all around player who I am looking at to carry me, especially in the limit events which he plays so good. My partner in the mini UBOC league has been beating up the tournaments on Ultimatebet forever. Mike “V00d00chile” Foley will probably win this league for us all by himself. Looking at the list, I see many good players and teams, most of whom I call my friends. I am looking forward to competing against all these guys and hopefully in the end having the bragging rights.

See you at the tables

Happy New Year.
