Halfway through race cards and things are going good!

Saturday, May 23, 2009 - Z06FANATIC

So we recently passed the half way marker during this race cards promotion and things are going well. I’ve been on a major heater over the past month+, giving me about 15k+ in profits from playing since the race cards began. I’ve been working hard and slowly been moving up the ladder – hopefully I can make top 5 when all is said and done, but that is going to require a lot of work. One thing that definitely helped me with this race card was pacing myself – a lot of players who were higher up on the race have since burned out – some played higher buy in games thinking they were winners and reality caught up quick, while others burnt themselves out early on. Pacing is so important in a 2 month race – this game can be mentally draining and turning out 70 hour weeks will take you down quick. I’ll post again when the race comes to an end hopefully with my name near the top!

Z06Fanatic’s Race Cards Poker Blog

Saturday, April 18, 2009 - Z06FANATIC

So the 4th installment of race cards has came around and entails a 2 month long race rather than the standard month long race. I always look forward to these races as the bonus money is amazing and it really pushes me mentally to go beyond what I have done in the past. It’s going to be crazy racing for 2 months – usually in the one month race after 3 weeks you’re dying for it to end – this time after 4 weeks when you’d be able to relax we’re only going to be half way there.

We shall see who has the mentality to keep going despite the cards not going their way and the grueling hours of sitting in front of the computer. My strategy is to put in the hours but not overdue it – this isn’t a sprint it’s a marathon, so I don’t want to come out of the gate too fast and burn out. Pacing yourself is definitely key to getting top 3 in these things. Anyways I’m off to a good start and looking forward to what the next couple of weeks bring me – good luck to everyone and may the best win

The Final Table Jitters

Monday, March 30, 2009 - John Greene

The first time you’re at the final table for any tournament is an experience that can only be described as “nerve-wracking.” I remember a player I know telling me that getting into the final table of a WPT event was worse than the jitters he’d experienced before getting married – he didn’t have the chance to walk away with $250k when he exchanged rings and I’ve felt that nausea that’s a mix of elation and terror myself a few times. There’s a few things you can do to help mitigate this fear, though.

Play The Cards You Are Given
Throughout the majority of the tournament, a good player can do well using his cards and the basic mathematics of poker. In fact, you may well have an advantage over your opponents when you play the game and not the people: bluffing and flashy play tends to come from a certain type of player – the kind you never see at the final table. It’s tight, smart tournament players that get to the end and it’s where the true spirit of the game can come out.

At The Final Table, Play The Players
Math means less when you reach the final table of a poker tournament and the human factor kicks in. It’s obvious that everyone who reaches this point knows the game knows the risks and knows what cards you’re likely (and not) to be holding. Tight players can be knocked out by early bluffing and it might be possible to take big chunks of their bankroll before they even know what’s happening.

In The End, It Might As Well Be Called Luck
If you’re at the final table, you know what starting hands to play and you know when the odds say you should punch out. The problem is that every other player knows this and has gotten to their position by playing smart poker. You’ll have to take some real risks and be willing to be gutshot if you’re aiming at the big slice of the pie, and the sooner you become used to the idea, the sooner you’ll be able to go for it without vomiting.

(Yeah, that happened to me once. I don’t want to talk about it.)

If you’ve reached the final table of a tournament, it’s guaranteed that your entry fee has been taken care of and you’ll be walking away with a healthy profit. It’s maximizing that profit that you’ll have to focus on if you want to play like the pros.

Annie Duke Calls The Shots

Wednesday, March 11, 2009 - Josh

New York is a thrilling rush and no one is better at handling adrenaline than a poker player. That’s why Annie Duke is taking her psychological abilities from the poker tables onto Celebrity Apprentice’s boardrooms.

If her participation on NBC’s show is analyzed, it is easy to understand why she is the queen of poker. Definitely, this woman knows what she wants and she goes to any extent to get it. She’s an achiever, with a clear goal in mind: the journey’s distractions don’t derail her from the path she has set for her.

Even when some other contestants don’t have second thoughts whenever they have a chance to jump all over her, Annie remains calm and focused. She clearly knows about strategy and, even though this is a game where no chips at are stake, she holds her cards tight. Although she’s not speaking about poker on Celebrity Apprentice, her actions speak louder than any words could…

If scrutinized, the tactics she uses on the boardroom can be smoothly translated onto the tables. What better lesson than wearing comfy shoes when you know you’ll have to run NY streets to accomplish a task? While others wear Manolo Blahniks even for hiking, Annie knows when to leave her Pradas at home… Just like that, a good player studies the opponent’s trademarks before the games begin. A poker icon knows the grounds where the battle will take place and will practice the moves in advance. Poker is as intricate as real life, we might as well learn from Duke since she is definitely making the best out of hers.

From The Felt: They might not be very good at poker.

Monday, March 9, 2009 - John Greene

You’re in a tournament where the blinds have hit 750/1500.  You’re trucking right along, playing the game as best you can and suddenly you catch this guy catching a lucky draw after betting heavily.  The next time, they play heavily on a pair when there’s a straight flush resting on the table staring at everyone.  After that, they win a small amount from pocket rockets when the board has number salad and one low-endface card.  What’s going on?

They just might not be very good at poker.

I know, it seems amazing that someone who’s not very good at poker can get as far as those sorts of blinds but I’ve seen it happen more than once and worse than that, I’ve seen seasoned players who have no small amount of talent fall to the idiot savants who practice the zen art of sucking.  There’s a couple of reasons why, but the main one has to do with their tells.  Every hand they’ve held is important to them and you get more and more tells so there’s a confirmation bias occurring when they do actually end up getting gutpunched on AA or KK.

It’s usually because they’re new to the game and it can be difficult to suss out if this is an act (I’ve seen less aggressive/stupid behavior at the table) or someone is being genuine in their inability to go in for the kill, but my general advice is to play a little more conservatively around these people instead of trying to guess when they’re actually bluffing.  It’s better to let yourself get bluffed and lose blinds than be wrong and hand over too much of your stack.  Let someone else fall on their sword in their efforts to take down the new guy.

Omaha or Texas Hold’em?

Friday, March 6, 2009 - ProductMan

Everyone loves a good debate. Whether it’s the battle of the spoon vs. the fork, ale vs. lager, or The Beatles vs. The Stones, who can resist getting wrapped up in a heated war of words and pulling out all the stops for their favorite? When the argument starts, it seems like everybody not only has an opinion, but contends to be some sort of authority.  I guess there’s nothing wrong with a little loyalty and passion.

There’s certainly no shortage of heated debates in poker.  We all love quarreling over strategy, recounting old hands, and offering expert opinions on endless what-if situations, but there is another argument unfolding on the felt and it is really just a matter of personal preference.  Which do you prefer, Texas Hold’em or Omaha?  Even though Texas Hold’em deserves its legendary status and top billing on TV and at major events, I’ve always found Omaha to be more refined, almost like the natural evolution of poker. Where do you like stacking your chips?

Some players like to stay in their comfort zone.  If you haven’t yet taken advantage of our Omaha tables, you can access them in the lobby.  Just click on the “Omaha” tab located under the “Games” tab or browse through our scheduled and sit and go Omaha tournaments.   You can choose from Omaha High and Omaha Hi-Lo.  Learn the ropes at our free tables or find a game at all stakes.

Let us know what you think of all our games.  How do you like our offerings? What in particular do you like about them? Which games do you prefer? What do you want the future of poker to hold?

Let your voice be heard by voting in the poll below, and/or posting your opinions right into the blog.  You have the power to help shape our games. This would be the time to take a stand, or at least let the world know where you like to sit!

Do you prefer Omaha or Texas Holdem?
