Day 1B

Tuesday, October 6, 2009 - Gene Bromberg

Day 1B is just about to begin here at the 2009 Aruba Poker Classic, and we’re expecting a lot more people today than the 188 who took to the felt yesterday. Split starting days are common now on the poker tour and there’s always that question of whether you should play on the first day or the second. The latest possible starting day is usually the most crowded, and so there might be more dead money in the field that day. Then again most pros seem to prefer playing on the later dates, so that might complicate matters. Playing the first day means you have the whole week to enjoy the beach if you get knocked out, but you also have to be ambulatory by noon the day after the Welcome Banquet. A tall order for some, an impossible ordeal for others.

So it all comes down to your own personal preference. In a way it’s like a Rorschach test, there are no right or wrong answers. Unless you look at that inkblot and see Grandma throwing Santa Claus down a flight of stairs. ‘Cause, like, that’s SO wrong.

And with that Tournament Director Matt Savage has instructed the players on the rules, told the dealers where to put the button, and we’ve heard the call of “Shuffle up and deal”. Pics of the players in the field today to follow.

I can’t believe…

Monday, July 27, 2009 - Debo34

Aruba is just 9 weeks away. This will be my 7th straight year that I fly to Aruba for the best poker tournament on the planet. In my opinion, no poker venue that I have ever been to can compare to Aruba. Matt Savage and crew do an amazing job with all the tournaments and side games and there is never a shortage of action if you are looking for it.

Aruba was the first trip package that I ever won online, and for that will always be special. I had only played poker online for about 2 months when I won my first trip to Aruba. I remember on the flight down there all I could think about was poker, poker, poker. That changed shortly after my plane touched down in Aruba. It didn’t take long to form friendships with players that I had been playing with online, and find other fun stuff to do on the island besides play poker all day. People I consider close friends almost 8 years later like fellow team UB members Mark Kroon and Shawn Rice. Guys like Tracy Scala, Robbie Cunningham and Mike Foley are all guys I met in Aruba my first year, and call friends today.

So over the past 7 years poker has been just a piece of the excitement in Aruba. Parties, poker, scuba diving, golfing, and of course the great nightlife are all reasons why Aruba is such a great poker venue.

This year I will be looking to improve on my best Aruba finish that I had last year. Last year I finished 22nd and walked away scratching my head. I wasn’t happy with the way I played my last few hands, and made some mistakes down the stretch that cost me. I felt like I really had a chance to win the tournament last year. With the great structure of this tournament I feel like I am going to make a deep run this year as well.

Hope to see you on the island

Shutupanplay at the UB blog tourney

Thursday, May 28, 2009 - UB Marketing

There was a lot of action and taunting, but in the end it was about SHUTUPANPLAY.

At almost two in the morning today SANNY1254 lost the final hand to SHUTUPANPLAY’s two pair (7s and 5s).  The UB blog tournament took nearly six hours to wrap up as the biggest field yet fought it out for a $200K seat and cash prizes.

Over a thousand players found the code to unlock registration and play in the tournament.  Our very own UB blogger, Gene, couldn’t make it as he was on his way to Vegas and the start of UB’s WSOP activities.  And, his blog tourney replacement was shut out of the tournament due to an electrical storm.  So, without the live coverage, here’s some other coverage.  Perhaps you can report on last night’s tourney?

The final table all cashed and they deserve the credit.  But, today we’ll celebrate all blog tournament players and the top 28, listed below in order of tournament rank.  Note Vadim55 who finished in lucky italian #13.   XASTRATEX took the honors in position 1035, inching out BACHNGOCDUONG for last place by only fractions of a second.  And notable in their own way, players BUTCHEROS, BARBNDARREN, TBABY74BELL, INVALIDACCT, and AKNAPC must’ve been in a monster hand, ‘cause they all got knocked out at the same time for a joint ranking of 895th place.

The Final Table Jitters

Monday, March 30, 2009 - John Greene

The first time you’re at the final table for any tournament is an experience that can only be described as “nerve-wracking.” I remember a player I know telling me that getting into the final table of a WPT event was worse than the jitters he’d experienced before getting married – he didn’t have the chance to walk away with $250k when he exchanged rings and I’ve felt that nausea that’s a mix of elation and terror myself a few times. There’s a few things you can do to help mitigate this fear, though.

Play The Cards You Are Given
Throughout the majority of the tournament, a good player can do well using his cards and the basic mathematics of poker. In fact, you may well have an advantage over your opponents when you play the game and not the people: bluffing and flashy play tends to come from a certain type of player – the kind you never see at the final table. It’s tight, smart tournament players that get to the end and it’s where the true spirit of the game can come out.

At The Final Table, Play The Players
Math means less when you reach the final table of a poker tournament and the human factor kicks in. It’s obvious that everyone who reaches this point knows the game knows the risks and knows what cards you’re likely (and not) to be holding. Tight players can be knocked out by early bluffing and it might be possible to take big chunks of their bankroll before they even know what’s happening.

In The End, It Might As Well Be Called Luck
If you’re at the final table, you know what starting hands to play and you know when the odds say you should punch out. The problem is that every other player knows this and has gotten to their position by playing smart poker. You’ll have to take some real risks and be willing to be gutshot if you’re aiming at the big slice of the pie, and the sooner you become used to the idea, the sooner you’ll be able to go for it without vomiting.

(Yeah, that happened to me once. I don’t want to talk about it.)

If you’ve reached the final table of a tournament, it’s guaranteed that your entry fee has been taken care of and you’ll be walking away with a healthy profit. It’s maximizing that profit that you’ll have to focus on if you want to play like the pros.
