Aruba Part 2

Sunday, October 25, 2009 - Liv Boeree

So last week I finished off on me busting out of the Main Event. This left me with a whole five days of Aruban freedom to get more sun, sand and sea than you can shake a stick at.  The sea part of this started early the wednesday morning when I met with Brandon Cantu, his girlfriend Leslie and Allie Prescott for breakfast, and I proposed the idea of renting a small catamaran which according to the intrepid Binger brothers, was the best and most relaxing watersport on offer.  Now I’ve been sailing a few times as a kid, and even have the holder of the world record for the longest sailing circumnavigation of the globe in my family, and this gave me an over-inflated impression that I knew how to sail. I apparently exuded this confidence to the rest of the “crew” and also to the boat rental woman, who when she asked if we knew how to sail we very proudly said yes.

So after telling us we had strictly one hour, she set us in the water and handed me the rudder and sail rope(?!). Before you could say shark, the wind grabbed us and sent us on our merry way, very much alone.  Things actually started well, with Brandon going “wow, you actually can sail”, everyone relaxed as we sped along the coast at one with nature’s forces. That was until we had to turn and try and go the other way. We’d been instructed to ONLY turn into the wind, as turning away from it could be dangerous and lead to capsizing. However, turning into the wind resulted in the sail going limp and all momentum lost. Therefore we opted for the latter, and the boat nearly turned over Leslie and Brandon got whacked in the head by the sail flipping to the otherside.

Stupidly, I then let the boys take over and before we knew it we had only twenty minutes left and were about two miles out to sea. Despite this we somehow floundered back at the slowest pace anyone’s ever moved back to shore and got back just thirty minutes late. Ahem.

So you’d think that’d be the last time we ever went sailing alone. Oh no. we went again and this time managed to flip the boat over twice, the first time completely by a combination of ignorance and a huge gust of wind, and the second time because the first time was so funny that we wanted to do it again.

Moving on… so the other things I did for the rest of the trip included a horse ride through the Aruban landscape (complete with galloping on the beach) and a very bumpy ATV ride to some beautiful coastal features. In the nighttime were fantastic parties, including the legendary party in Phil Hellmuth’s rooftop suite, which had a private performance by the Dan band and more bottles of champagne than you can imagine. Oh and naked girls in the hot tub, can’t forget them! The Ultimatebet closing party was stunning as well, with the Dan band performing on a stage over the pool, more naked people and bodypainted gladiator models roaming around giving you cocktails. What a perfect end to the perfect trip!

Aruba Part 1

Saturday, October 17, 2009 - Liv Boeree

Well where can I start? I’m sat in Amsterdam airport after a somewhat hellish, screaming child filled ten hour flight back from a certain beautiful little island. The past ten days has been my personal heaven – the Ultimatebet Aruba Classic. After a riotous few days in Amsterdam with various UB pros we arrived in the balmy tropics and got straight to the most important part – locating the rest of the team and hitting the bar.

The first full day was spent on the beach and warming up my tubing skills for the inevitable bouts of last longer bets that were to bound to occur throughout the week. A number of us (including team members Matt Graham, Roothlus, Tiffany and Billy) rented a boat and we went for a very beery cruise involving diving competitions and trying to swim back to the boat against a very strong ocean current.

aruba

That night was the opening party including all the free booze and food UB could throw at the guests, and which inevitably ended up in everyone getting thrown in the pool. Lacey Jones and I had a chicken fight aboard Matt Vengrin and Matt Graham (we won, of course), and Phil managed to get through about $10,000 getting ladies to jump in the pool naked.

Lacey and I also got $1000 for one lucky guy who was the first one to jump in naked also… gotta keep the balance between the sexes!

aruba chicken fight

Monday was relatively quiet as it was day 1A, and half of the pros, myself included, had been scheduled for a new UB photoshoot which I can’t wait to see the results of. Tuesday was day 1B, which was my first day of play. I had the Great Poker Ho on my table, who was lauding it up the way only Ho can, rallying the table and generally creating mayhem with some huge pots. Sadly things didn’t go Ho’s way once Robbie Cunningham came to the table and started crushing it utterly. I swear to God he had Jacks or better every other hand for two hours, and played them tricky enough too, knocking Ho out in the process. An interesting (and kinda costly hand) for me was when I had around starting stack and the blinds were 100 200. Robbie makes it 525 in the hijack, I have queens and make it 1600 in the cutoff. However, the supertight girl to my left who hadn’t played many hands at all goes to call his initial raise before I even get chance to act. When I say wait a minute, and do my threebet she instacalls behind anyway. The SB, who has been pretty LAG and was “internetting it up” as they like to say now does a really weird min raise making it 2700. Robbie now says “what the hell do I do?” and flats. I now ask the same question, and chose to call behind too (in hindsight should’ve jammed here, I mean, Laggy guy could have anything, Robbie or the girl, if they have me beat here are reraising) and the girl flats. The board comes A j 10 and Robbie bets out 2/3, I muck, the girl mucks and the SB stuffs it in with… A-10. What does the Cunningham have? Jacks of course.

My day went pretty much downhill from there and I got short after whiffing AK three times, and then found 10s vs QQs which sent me packing to the beach for more fun and frolics that I’ll document next week… tough life!

What you put into it is what you get out

Friday, September 18, 2009 - Billy Kopp

Since my last blog, I have been playing more cash games and less multi table tournaments on Ultimate Bet.  I really want to play cash games more often, especially live when I get to Vegas.  The intense volume I am able to put in online is great practice and I am still turning a nice profit.  The rest of the time that I haven’t been playing or blogging, I have been spending playing golf.
I’m trying to get back into the game of golf after not playing for about three years.  I played golf in high school at a very small private school and was fairly decent.  I remember buying my first set of irons for about $250.  I wasn’t completely satisfied with them but they were new and what I could afford at the time.  Throughout the four years I played in high school I felt that I was an inferior player partially because of the equipment I was using.  The whole set of clubs that I bought in 2000 were still in my garage at the beginning of this year.  Deciding to get back into the game, I told myself that I needed new equipment because mine was outdated and hindering my performance on the course.  Clearly the reason why I was subpar in high school was because I had mediocre clubs and the small mark in my driver was definitely affecting how straight my drives were and was causing me to hit it in the rough more often (or so I thought).
One of my high school golf teammates now owns golf shop.  I contacted him and got fitted for my new equipment that was going to make me a scratch golfer for sure.  I got a whole new setup: custom bag, irons, woods, wedges, tees, balls, shoes, gloves, you name it.  Man I looked good on the course the first day I got back out.  I laced up my comfortable Adidas shoes, and strapped on my new leather glove.  I’m on the first tee with my ProV1 golf ball (the best ball on the tour so they say, also to note the most expensive) teed up on a high 4 inch tee about to be sent a million miles down the fairway from the strike of this amazing new Taylor Made R9 driver that had just come out at the time.  I address the ball and line up my shot.  I take a proud swing and looked for the ball that should be straight down the middle of the fairway; however it is nowhere near there.  I see the ball bouncing about 45 yards to left.  Apparently I got too excited and pulled my head up and topped the ball.  No problem, I haven’t played in three years I’ll just take a mulligan.  I re-tee another one and address the ball.  I crushed it! I crushed it 260yards to the left AGAIN but ending up in the rough an entire hole over.  I continued to play and hacked up the course pretty badly.  How could this be?? I have the best/ most expensive equipment and I played worse than when I was in high school with mediocre equipment.
All jokes aside, the equipment I now have is amazing and of better quality than the equipment of my past.  It has already helped me in small ways the little that I have played.  The main point is that regardless of how great or how poor your equipment is, the over bearing factor is more importantly the person or the user.  Looking back, I loved golf but I didn’t really put in the time and effort to become a great golfer.  I recall skipping the chipping and putting practices to rush to the driving range to crush drives.  I didn’t practice correctly to improve myself throughout the years, but I was satisfied with being a “decent” player.  I started back into the game recently with the wrong approach once again but didn’t realize it until now.  I expected to go out and be just as decent or better than I was 6-10 years ago and then improve very quickly.  Equipment aside, I am not in as good of shape and I also hit my clubs different distances now.  I had not gone to the range multiple times before I got back on the course to get distances down on the clubs or to practice putting and chipping.   Coming into the game blind after three years of no practice or coaching and expecting to do well was highly unrealistic.
In high school I played better than I do now due to some coaching and the help of my peers.  I also put in more time walking on the course and reading greens in practice rounds than now and I was only merely decent then.  Although I ride in a cart now because I’m too lazy to walk the course, I’m still capable of studying the course, greens, etc. and need to, to become remotely decent at the game of golf.  I played years and years of online poker tournaments to put in intense volume to gain experience.  I met other successful players (peers) to talk to about hands and gain advice and more experience.  I sacrificed sleep, school, outings with friends, joining a fraternity, and even my health at times to get to where I am today but it has paid off!
I put 100% of my competitive spirit into poker and made it a large part of my life.  To become the golfer I want to be, I would have to put in the same hours and practice and make the same sacrifices as I did for poker to be classified as a professional in another field by my peers.   Realistically, I can’t devote that amount of time to golf as I have and do to poker to become great at golf at this time in my life.  I am satisfied being am amateur golfer but no longer just a decent golfer.  I want to be a good golfer and I am going to need to spend lots more time preparing myself to play on the course.  Currently I am only finding time to get in a quick 9 or 18 holes and it has been a major waste of time.  The relaxation part of golf has become stressful and counterproductive due to playing poorly.  I am going to the range tomorrow to start the process of preparing myself to become a good golfer.  I need to get a few golf lessons in, so let me know if someone out there reading this wants to trade a few golf secrets for a few poker secrets!
Until next time, hit ‘em straight and hope to see you joining me in the cash games on UB.

Traveling a lot…

Friday, September 4, 2009 - Michaelbinger

Hi all!
I’m writing this from 30000 feet! Flying Virgin America from Vegas to NY. Great airline… I decided to splurge for first class since they have wireless onboard and I figured I could pay for the upgrade through online poker winnings. 4 hours into the flight and I’ve shown a nice profit. Success! I played some of the no limit tables on Ultimate Bet with the bonus for winning with 2-7. Quite fun, except when you find yourself bluffing hundreds of dollars chasing that bonus ;-) .
Oh yes, and I finally can play UB on my MacBook! They have Apple compatible download now.

Anyhow, I am starting off a 5 week trip away from home. Headed to the Hamptons tonight. A friend rented a posh house there for the labor day weekend and invited me. Thanks D!
After that I’m going to Raleigh to see Mom and family and then NY to see friends. Then to Philly for a good friend’s wedding… I’m a groomsman. Then to Atlantic City for Borgata tourney, followed by London for the WSOP Europe. And finally… phew, let me catch my breath… to Aruba the first week of October for the UB Aruba Poker Classic. That is always great fun.

Oh by the way this week I went to Spago in Caesars Palace Forum shops for the first time… one of the best meals I’ve ever had. I was shocked how good it was.

Also, this week I’ve gotten back to working on some poker math projects. Doing some cool stuff with 2-7 triple draw now.

Best of Luck,
Michael Binger

Motorcycle Trip & Poker

Thursday, September 3, 2009 - Bryan Devonshire

So turns out Newton or Galileo or whoever way smarter than I said, “Objects at rest stay at rest, objects in motion stay in motion,” was on to something.  Today is day 43 that I’ve been away from home on this Great Ride of a motorcycle trip, and for the last seventeen of them the I’ve remained in Cornelius, NC.  A bit lazy I admit.  But I’ve finally rustled up the motivation to get going again, I’m headed down to Myrtle Beach, SC today, then around the Florida peninsula to Key West, back along the Gulf Coast all the way to Dallas, north to Colorado, and back to Vegas.

I’ve played a lot of poker in the last couple of weeks.  I was super disappointed in my result in LA, yet looking back I really don’t see anything I should have done differently.  The rest of the last week has been much the same, I feel like I’m playing really well yet running quite poorly.  Last night six of us shot a video for PokerVT.  Daniel Negreanu, Jon Ettinger, Jon Turner, Josh Norris, and Jason Summerville and I played a 1-2 NLHE 6max game for 2 hours while all independently filming live while talking our way through the hands.  I think that it’s going to end up coming out really well.  I lost about $200, only playing one big pot where I got all the money in pre with AA v. Daniel’s QQ and he played the flop way better than I flopping a queen.

Also last night I was playing 10-20 Stud8 on Ultimate Bet for a while and busted this guy with a short stack.  He had $38 to start the hand, we were five handed, a 6 brought it in, he was showing an ace and completed to $10, and I was next with (K2)K.  Normally a very crappy situation in stud8, cause they either have split aces, three to a low, or are on a steal due to the weak board between him and the bring-in.  Anyways, since he only had $38 it wasn’t much of a decision, get it in.  I do, he actually has split aces, but I play fifth street good and made kings and deuces, he never improved.  That launched the most amazing rant ever against me.  I had no respect, ruined the game, ruined online poker, etc, because it was obvious that he had aces.  He wanted me to apologize, still not sure what for, and the “sad part” was that I “STILL THINK [I] WON”.  He said it like a zillion times.  I actually gave him a logical response first, saying that it wasn’t much of a decision since he only had two big bets, then I somewhat sarcastically talked about my two pair beat his one pair, but much like a crazy emotional woman logic was lost this dude, so all I could do was encourage him.  Tell me more?  Yeah?  How so?  It was amazing, honestly the best berating I have ever been given.  He never did reload sadly.

Because of so much poker this week I haven’t done anything too exciting.  Got home on Thursday, lazy on Friday, Lake on Saturday, poker on Sunday, played a couple hours in a worse than expected home game Monday afternoon then played online Monday night, and then Tuesday I played tennis with Court, got beat twenty-four games in a row, but had fun lol.  I was about as good as possible with that record, and even made it to advantage me once.  Came home, played online, slept, laundry now, and ready to go.  People wonder why I don’t like playing online.  It sucks the life out of you that’s why.  So I’m ready to get back on the road, but since it is the WCOOP coming up and I do still do this for a living I’ll probably be stopping a bit early along the way and playing donkaments.

Less poker, more life imo.  I’m off to do just that.

Peace and good luck,

Devo

Once Upon a Time in Blogsville

Tuesday, September 1, 2009 - Roothlus

So it’s official I’ve lived in Los Angeles for exactly one month as of today.  And so far, I’ve loved it. I’ve been to a bunch of cool spots and it’s very refreshing to be around more lady friends and have the opportunity to do an array of things on a given day. The lifestyle seems way more upbeat and on the go but not in a NYC kinda way where people are on the go but aren’t particularly friendly. Everyone seems way happier and just a tad crazy too which I love.  It’s definitely a healthy change from Las Vegas. Don’t get me wrong I love me some Vegas but in weekend doses. As a whole I felt sucked into the whole city. I was extremely lazy and ate horribly. Granted, the food I ate was super top quality but by no means does that make it healthy. Since moving to LA I joined 24-hr Fitness and have been on the workout grind almost day-in day-out. I haven’t lost much weight yet but I feel so much healthier than I did a mere month ago.

My goal is to look good for the best stop on the live poker circuit, the Aruba Poker Classic. And while yes, I am a member of Team Ultimate Bet and you’re thinking, well isn’t this a blatant plug?? Well, you’re only half right ‘cause I legitimately love it. Last year, I was a little bit nervous at first. I had just joined UB and was meeting a whole bunch of new people and was a little bit overwhelmed. By the 3rd day or so I found myself just having a total blast. It’s honestly a great week of partying with a little bit of poker on the side.  Oh, and the Phil Hellmuth penthouse party is nothing short of awesome! On top of all this, it’s Ultimate Bet’s 10th anniversary this year and they’ll be celebrating it at the Aruba Poker Classic.  So if anyone is undecided about going this year, I hope I swayed you into going because it’s going to be EPIC!

As far as what’s on tap for me the rest of the year, I’ll be taking it easy. The WCOOP starts on Thursday and I’ll be pretty focused on that until the end of September at which point I’ll be making my way to said Aruba Poker Classic. After that, I’ll see my parents for a few days in Florida, jaunt back to LA for a week, then spend a week or so in Vegas for Festa Lago. But after that crazy little patch of traveling, my only tourney I’ll be traveling to is the Five-Diamond Classic in December. It’s kind of nice to not be traveling to every tournament under the sun for a change. And when I am traveling it’s only to Vegas, a mere 4-hour drive.

Well, I guess this is actually short for my blogs but before I go I recently had the opportunity to play in Scott Ian’s home game on Ultimate Bet last week. Hate to make a pun, but it was rockin’. I got to play with Vinnie Paul, Kirk Hammett, Layne Stayley, and a bunch of other rockers including Scott Ian himself. I ended up getting 4th as things unraveled. First was an Aruba package but better someone else win it  when I’m going regardless. I’d definitely recommend playing in the satellites to this very special tourney.

Ok, now seriously, lastly, check me out on ESPN’s Inside Deal this week. They did a phone interview today so that was pretty cool. Until my next blog peeeeeeace.

Online play on UltimateBet.com

Saturday, August 29, 2009 - Brandon Cantu

Prior to signing my sponsorship deal and joining an elite group of pros on Team UB, I had played some online poker. My play was quite irregular, consumed basically with Sunday tournaments and random cash games here and there. I have become known as a live player rather than an online one. However, since signing on with UltimateBet and post WSOP, I have really begun to dig into online poker and cash games much more.

At first, I was playing at my personal $5-$10 table on UB. I realized I wasn’t mentally prepared for it. I was coming off live play all summer at the WSOP. I had some less than stellar sessions, to say the least. I dug down, I refocused and began with some $2-$4 NL tables and started grinding; 5 tabling. What I found was that I was actually enjoying playing online for 10 hours a day. Not to mention, I was playing great. I was getting cards and I was winning. I moved back up to $5-$10 NL tables and still had success. This was about the time that I found some great heads up games. I have noticed since I started playing a ton on UB, heads up games have been the most profitable for me.

I have had some pretty decent online tournament results as well. In early August, I final tabled a UB $120.00 buy-in. I was just getting warmed up for the month and finished 5th for $2000. Things were progressing nicely. On August 16, I was playing the Sunday $500.00 buy-in with a $100k GTD. One particular hand in this tournament has gained notoriety within the Pocket Fives forums. This hand was actually a huge point of the tournament for me as well; a tournament that I went on to win for $36,000.00 and beat out PSMONEY heads up. The aforementioned “misclick” truly did take place and it gave me the energy I needed to close this one out. Lots of people like to say that I “run like god” and either get extremely lucky or blow up with terrible plays. For as many fortunate situations that have rolled my way, an even greater amount of detrimental rolls have come my way. Below, you will find the PocketFives discussion:

http://www.pocketfives.com/poker-forums/7/pretty-sick-misclick-on-ft-of-100k-by-brandoncantu-4586074

I’m watching the FT and this happens. They were playing each other pretty hard. I have no idea if it really was a misclick, there was a pretty good pause before the call.

Two days after the $100k GTD win, I was playing a VIP 45 Seat tournament. I had a bounty on my head and I was about to make the VIP players earn it. I got off to a slow start as I wasn’t really picking up any hands. I was also playing some other cash games at the time. I then made some plays, doubled up and was moving. I got real focused real fast. I ended up finishing 4th which netted me $400.00. The final table had some really good players. I watched the remainder of the tournament and NIGHTMAREFIS ended up outlasting DONKINITUP, who each took home $1,200.00 and $800.00 respectfully. I must say, these VIP 45 Seat tournaments are a good time.

Mentally, the last few months being a member of Team UB, has improved my game. I feel so comfortable logging into the UltimateBet client, it continues to feel like a home game for me. I am so relaxed and focused. I have easily played the best online poker of my life since joining UltimateBet. I am going to keep working on my online game to improve even more but I cannot lose focus of my live playing goals for the remainder of 2009.

Good luck everyone with all the upcoming travels and tournaments. See you on the road. Look for me playing on UltimateBet.com at both my $5-$10 NL 6-handed and $5-$10 NLHU tables.

First blog

Tuesday, August 25, 2009 - Billy Kopp

As the newest Ultimate Bet team pro, I’m excited to share my first blog with all of you. For those of you who don’t know, my name is Billy Kopp and I reside in Erlanger, Kentucky. I am twenty three years old and have been playing online poker for the past five years. I got my start into poker by playing small home games with friends. While going to college at the University of Kentucky, I began to play primarily online. I had success and was able to meet other successful players online who helped me to advance my game.

This summer I made a transition into playing more live events. I had a second place finish in the 5k New Orleans WSOP Circuit event for a nice six figure score. After that I proceeded to play in several WSOP events. I was fortunate enough to get 8th in the 5k no limit event and then 11th in the 10k pot limit event. Finally, I finished in the summer out with a 12th place finish in the main event for a little under $900,000. I can proudly say that Ultimate Bet was by far the best site for me to represent. Due to the help of my agency, Suited Connections, I was able to land a long-term deal with the site. I have played on UB for years and have had success in the biggest multi table tournaments they have to offer including a win in their Sunday major. To date, I have never given substantial time to playing cash games.  Now, I will be playing cash games along with multi-table tournaments on Ultimate Bet under the name “billy_kopp”.

Lots of people have been asking me what my next live event will be. I am currently in the process of moving to Las Vegas, so the next event for me will probably be the $5,000 main event in Biloxi, Mississippi at the Beau Rivage in September, followed by the Ultimate Bet Aruba Poker Classic in October. Once everything is settled in Vegas I will be playing more live events. On a side note, I want to wish my friend and fellow colleague Adam “Roothlus” Levy good luck in the Legends of Poker tournament going on at the Bicycle Casino right now. Hopefully he can bring home another win for the UB team.

I can’t wait to meet the other team pros in Aruba.  I have never played in the Aruba Classic and wish everyone who plays the best of luck. For all of you reading this, I hope to get to play with all of you on the site at some point soon!

Until next time,

Billy Kopp

New Features Coming to UB!

Friday, July 24, 2009 - UB Marketing

Now that WSOP is over we are shifting our gears to The Aruba Poker Classic in October. It’s UltimateBet’s 10th Anniversary and we’re going to be celebrating! We’re planning our opening and closing parties to blow all others out of the Caribbean waters and should be sending more of our own blood to the tourney this year than ever. We’ve already qualified over 40 players and are looking forward to our first big seat giveaway on August 2nd. After it’s said and done, 25 lucky UB players will have their seats reserved to the Ultimate Island Poker Tournament. With at least $2 million in guaranteed cash for this year’s tourney, it’s destined to be recorded as a part of poker history.

The Donkament is in full effect on the site and dragging in the best of our sharks and donkeys. With only points to lose and cash to win, these games are getting feverishly active. Get in on the action from as low as 200 points and qualify for up to $50,000 in cash.

We have some exciting product releases coming up, including our UB Mac software launching next month. Be on the lookout later for a client download that is compatible with your Apple Macintosh so you can get rid of those tedious parallels to run Windows on a Mac. As the release gets closer we’ll keep everyone posted on the launch date and new features to be expected.

40th WSOP Main Event

Friday, July 3, 2009 - UB Marketing

July 3rd…. This can only mean 1 thing: The MAIN EVENT just kicked off.

That’s right, we have reached that precious day for every poker player when the biggest and most prestigious No limit Holdem event begins. This will be the 40th time the Main Event has taken place and of course things have changed a bit since 1970.

The World Series of Poker will hardly be replaced by another poker event. It has become such a tradition where the best players meet to test their skills and it is quite improbable for another Poker event to take over the WSOP.

So how many people will attend the main event? No idea, but probably a record could be set. This year we have seen Holdem events with amazing figures but one tourney that had a major deficit in attendance was the 50k H.O.R.S.E. Championship which was recently disputed.

What about UB and the Main Event? Well, we achieved to qualify over 170 players and the $10,000,000 promotion has caught the eye of more than one player. So if you are still in Vegas, look for UB staff and sign with them… who knows, if you win the main event you could end up $10,000,000 richer on top of the prizepool of the Main Event.

Also, if you are in Vegas be sure to be close to the Rio prior the Main Event begins.. it seems Mr. Phil Hellmuth is preparing to make use of his 11 Bracelets bragging rights so don’t be surprised if he crashes a car in to the lobby or lands on a Helicopter in the middle of the strip…

For everyone at the WSOP 2009 Main Event, good luck and hope to see you at the best poker tournament in the Caribbean…. ARUBA CLASSIC 2009.
